There was a lot I liked in this opening to Season 2. It could be the awesomeness that was Epitaph One that left me with a few reservations.
The Excellent:
- Claire/Whiskey. Amy Acker's whole performance was breathtaking. Playing mind games with Topher; reacting to Boyd with wariness and hope; seducing Topher and what we learned about both of them because of it.
- Echo and Whiskey flashback/Sierra and Ivy scene. I love Joss Whedon! I knew he'd get the gay and kink in there soon. Sierra's crisp Brit accent as she tells Ivy she has a thing against Asians but if Ivy needs to spank her .... :-D
The Good:
- Paul Ballard. We're seeing him as a disturbed and sometimes creepy guy -- out in the open now. Still likable but with a darkness that is going to, I hope, crop up a lot even with him becoming Echo's handler in the end. Loved him knocking Echo around when he realized she was short circuiting and he could use that to unleash her primal side.
- Jamie Bamber and Aexis Denisof. Both using their real accents! Jamie being an absolute shit and having a great time while doing so. None of the existentialist Lee Adama when he rammed Echo's head into the desk. Looking forward to more Alexis as the politician!
- Use of the ensemble works better than all Eliza. And it benefits Eliza, too. Echo becomes a much more sympathetic character when she isn't carrying the entire show.
- Victor and Sierra. The newly un-scarred Victor taking Sierra's hand. So childlike.
The Not As Good:
- The "Echo-story-of-the-week." A bit lame. Reminded me too much of most of Season 1. Still, I'll forgive it -- for now.
I enjoyed this episode. The lead-ins to Epitaph One were there but with lots of wiggle room. I'm looking forward to the rest of this season.
