Title: That Girl
Rating: G
Fandom: HP
Pairing: Severus Snape/Lily Evans
Challenge: 5sentence_fics
Prompt: Table 5, Claim #1; unlimited

Late at night, when thoughts of the pretty, petite red-head and her obnoxious sister invaded his mind, Severus Snape thought he might die for her. Sometimes he screwed his eyes closed so tightly they hurt and watered, fervently dreaming of the day when they would ride the train to Hogwarts, together. Away, his mind whispered, someplace safe, someplace where she is only mine. The sounds of his parents' arguments faded as he thought of Lily Evan's blazing eyes. If he'd known then how to make an Unbreakable Vow, he would have promised himself that he would never, ever leave her side.

Title: How Enemies Are Made
Rating: PG
Fandom: HP
Pairing: Severus Snape/Lily Evans
Challenge: 5sentence_fics
Prompt: Table 5, Claim #2; impulse

Detention isn't all that bad, Severus reassured himself as he dropped into the uncushioned chair beside Professor McGonagall's desk, only half acknowledging her tirade as she and Professor Slughorn argued about the consequences of his actions. No matter what punishment they doled out between the two of them, Severus knew finally hexing James Potter had been worth it. Balling his hands to fists, he tried to blot out the image of Lily -- his Lily -- as she was Sorted into the House of famed courage. Well, Potter certainly wasn't all that brave when I caught him trying to chat up Lily outside of the Great Hall, he reminded himself, taking comfort in the memory of the other boy's terrified face. Smirking, he ignored McGonagall's look of stark disapproval and contented himself devising new and worse curses to fling if James dared try speak to Lily again.

Title: Summer Sun
Rating: PG
Fandom: HP
Pairing: Severus Snape/Lily Evans
Challenge: 5sentence_fics
Prompt: Table 5, Claim #3; out to play

"Don't you love this weather?" crowed Lily Evans, tipping her face up towards the sun, which shone favourably upon her, turning her red hair the colour of fire. Her eyes sparkled, emerald as the Slytherin House colours as she gazed across the green grass, taking in the pristine vision of the lake and the grounds.

"I love this," Severus clarified with a nod, indicating her hand, which rested comfortably in his own. I love you, he thought to himself, but did not quite dare say. Nothing needed to be verbalised, however, for she seemed to know anyway, and gave his fingers a comfortable squeeze.

Title: Sometimes, It Is Worth Everything
Rating: PG
Fandom: HP
Pairing: Severus Snape/Lily Evans
Challenge: 5sentence_fics
Prompt: Table 5, Claim #4; risk management

She had a friend who was a werewolf; a breath-taking, golden-eyed, bronze-skinned, bookish sort of boy in her same year, who taught her about the brooding moon rising in the October sky, and shared the secrets hidden in his heart, which was deeper than any well could ever flow.

She had a friend who ran feral through Gryffindor tower irregardless of the hour; a raven-haired madman who spouted familial hatreds and spoke to her of the incidental, overwhelming loneliness of being the sole decent person to descend from the family of blood Toujours Pur.

She had a friend who bore the burden of pride on his shoulders; a Quidditch captain in a perpetual game of breathtaking aerial ballet, who sometimes took her aside late at night and confessed the awful weight of expectation that had been thrust upon him, far too young.

Lily Evans knew young men could be ever so much more than they appeared, and she understood, somewhere around the beginning of her third year, when autumn turned crisp and the wind howled loudly outside her window, that loving young men was always a risk. Somehow, though, she was still defiant enough to want to love whenever she lifted her head in Potions class and met Severus Snape's dark eyes.

Title: Christmas Day
Rating: PG
Fandom: HP
Pairing: Severus Snape/Lily Evans
Challenge: 5sentence_fics
Prompt: Table 5, Claim #5; point of view

"That awful boy, he's not coming here," Petunia Evans shrieked when she received the news, renting the air with her displeasure as she pleaded with her parents to come to their senses.

In the end, Lily won out, as she always did, and the Christmas holidays were destroyed, in Petunia's opinion, by the timely arrival of Severus in his faded black cloak. He hurried from the Knight Bus to the open front door as if expecting to be turned away at the last moment, blushing red as he stumbled into the front room, which was decorated with strung mistletoe. He looked flustered, clutching the handle of his trunk and bearing a clumsily wrapped gift for each of the girls, though of course, Lily's was far bigger and covered in more ornate paper and bows. He might not have bothered with presents at all, Petunia later reflected, seeing as how the mere sight of him had made Lily grin wider than she had smiled over any of the assorted presents she was given on Christmas Day.

Title: Enmity
Rating: PG
Fandom: HP
Pairing: Severus Snape/Lily Evans
Challenge: 5sentence_fics
Prompt: Table 5, Claim #6; lost and alone

Crouched on the Quidditch pitch, doubled over with his hands clutching his stomach where James Potter had just hit him with an errant Bludger, Severus struggled to re-capture his breath. For a long, terrible moment, he felt utterly alone, watching Sirius Black work himself to hysterics that threatened to spill him from his broom, and taking in Pettigrew's unsubtle snicker. Only Remus Lupin seemed even slightly concerned about his welfare; from his spot on the stands, where he had been watching the Gryffindor team practise, Remus paled dramatically as blood dripped from Severus' mouth, staining his new school robes with streaks of red.

"That'll teach you to talk to my girl, you greasy git," shouted James angrily, a sneer twisting his face.

The claim behind the words hit Severus in the gut, stealing his breath and suffusing every ounce of his body with jealousy.

Title: Resurrection
Rating: PG
Fandom: HP
Pairing: Severus Snape/Lily Evans
Challenge: 5sentence_fics
Prompt: Table 5, Claim #7; flight of fancy

"That stupid, self-absored git!" Lily spat when Severus confronted her with James' actions the following day. Her anger hit him like a flare, knocking aside the tremulous insecurities that had hounded him during the long night before and replacing the fear with certainty that she was indeed still his. "He's obviously lost his mind, I'd take a troll over James Potter any day!"

"I don't believe there's much to differentiate the two, Lily, actually," Severus replied in a voice that suggested the conversation held little personal value to him. Inside, however, his heart soared, and he had to glance away to hide the devotion shining in his eyes.

Title: One Day in August
Rating: PG
Fandom: HP
Pairing: Severus Snape/Lily Evans
Challenge: 5sentence_fics
Prompt: Table 5, Claim #8; slow and steady

Summer had always been the best time of year for Severus, despite his reluctance to expose his pale skin to the brilliant sunlight lest it burn him crispy pink, and the summer between fourth and fifth year left absolutely nothing to be desired.

"Do you think we will always be like this, perfect like this?" Lily asked him once, on a hot August day when the heat of the sun had driven them to seek shelter beneath a towering pine. She shifted a bit, allowing him to rest his head in her lap as she stuck her feet into the cool water of the small creek that flowed past the park. "I mean, this is nice, isn't it, what we have?" she clarified, stroking his hair gently in the manner one might pet a cat.

"Yeah, Lily, it'll always be this way," he promised, and at the moment, he believed it to true.

Title: On His Honour
Rating: PG
Fandom: HP
Pairing: Severus Snape/Lily Evans
Challenge: 5sentence_fics
Prompt: Table 5, Claim #9; cold as ice

I've been made Prefect, Severus mused to himself as he ascended the platform to the Hogwarts express with his new badge pinned prominently to his chest. A strange power coursed through his veins at the thought, and he deliberated about control and malice as he stomped, wand out, down the corridors, brushing past wayward students, his eyes narrowed as he searched out Black and Potter, his breath quickening at the thought of finally putting them in their place after enduring years of torment at their hands. He was too involved with his own thoughts to notice James reaching out a foot to trip him, and he fell against the side of the train with a crash that was loud enough to echo over Potter's guffaws.

Steeling himself as he rose, Severus stared straight into the arrogant face he had grown to hate and docked more points from Gryffindor than he was probably allowed to withdraw, considering the term had not even started. You'll pay for that, Potter, with everything you have to give, he thought cruelly, drifting off to Lily's side and sneering directly at James as Lily's arm slipped easily into his.

Title: Vice-versa
Rating: PG
Fandom: HP
Pairing: Severus Snape/Lily Evans
Challenge: 5sentence_fics
Prompt: Table 5, Claim #10; just do it

"Look at me," he requested of her one autumn afternoon as they strode across the Hogwarts grounds, arms linked and fingers intertwined as always, the easy comraderie of their long-term friendship visible in their shared, unhurried gait.

She looked, her green eyes bright with curiousity, and Severus drew in a deep lungful of air, steadying himself for the confession he had rehearsed since second year but had never quite mustered the courage to deliver.

"I love you."

For the barest instant the words hung between them, suspended in mid-air and reflected in silence, and Severus felt as if he might be drowning, owing to the sudden, terrible pain in his chest that seemed to suffocate him. Then she replied.

"I love you, too."
