so, i've lived in the greater ithaca area (in wonderfully quaint ellis hollow) since this past august. the area is nice, but since i'm not working and i'm not attending an institution for educational advancement, i can't rationalize paying rent here. after a bit of trepidation, i finally spoke with my landlord about getting out of the lease. i worried about the difficulties in finding a new renter, but it really wasn't that difficult at all. i put an ad in the ithaca journal, ran it for only two days (which still cost me more than $50), and had people practically knocking down the door to get in and check it out. $400 including utilities is pretty damn good. it is often said that one will only stop taking something for granted once it is gone. well, my apartment is almost gone, and it is now that i've realized how nice it is to have my own place. i'll eventually live by myself again, i'm sure, but for now it will be back to navarino to live with my dad, step mom, brother, and most of the time at least, my brother's girlfriend. it'll be a big change, but hopefully it will only be temporary. for work, i'm not positive what i'll be doing. i'm going to call the local temp agencies about office jobs, and i interview tomorrow morning for a temporary civil service data-entry position for cortland county (wish me luck!). i'll also undoubtably make my return to glorious mark's pizzeria (simply the best!). this work will get me through the next couple of months, and then one of the other possibilities i have cooking will hopefully reach a level of doneness. i've contacted government agencies in belize about possibly interning this spring or summer, and i've also applied for a wonderful sounding internship opportunity in the dutch caribbean island of saint eustacius. i'm looking into going back to college in the undergraduate manner to pick up an additional bachelor's degree. this time it would be in economics, and after which i could hopefully find a job as an economist for a couple of years. i've been looking at the portland, oregon area as the place to head to in order to earn such a degree, focusing on pacific university. i plan to take a couple of economics courses this spring in order to have at least the basic economics courses completed for such an endeavor. moving to the portland area for reasons other than education has also taken much of my attention. i'm not tied down, and i've always wanted to experience the pacific northwest. if i could convince someone to go with me, it would make things easier, but i'm sure that i'd manage on my own. i managed when i visited belize on my own, and portland would be far less different from what i'm used to than belize was. my other major idea is to teach english abroad. i've looked into esl training, particularly in latin america, to prepare me to teach in thailand or china. i've also applied directly to three different programs for teaching english in japan, and have an opportunity to interview for one of them as soon as i take that up. heading to asia for a year or two would be a great formative experience, but i don't know how it would help me career-wise. of course, since i lack any firm idea of what career i'd like to pursue, spending time not working it is pretty much inevitable.
in any event, that's what's going on with me. any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. and any one that wants to join me in oregon, just let me know . . .
