what is normalcy?

i'm in the dc area now. i moved in mid-day on sunday. i have met two of my three roomies (the third should be around sometime this evening). one seems pretty cool. we'll leave it at that in regard to them.

that apartment is pretty nice, with decent spaciousness and an okay location. i am pretty content with this housing. the whole area is really cold right now, but it is warmer than syracuse, so that's a plus. compared to belize, of course, it is damn frigid. hopefully i'll make it through.

i still have no placement. this, of course, is incredibly stressful. there are several others in my same position, but that does little to appease me. i've gotta go downtown to meet with the intern coordinator tomorrow, hopefully something has come through. i would most like to work with international environmental policy, but i'd take nearly anything at this point. i am going to try hard to try to get into sherry boehlert's office. he and i lack the same political outlooks, but, for a republican at least, he's a pretty strong environmentalist. he represents the cortland area, so i might have an in. one of the others from cortland that is in the program is working in his office as it is, but i lack any idea of how that would help or hinder me and my attempts.

it is difficult being here and lacking many people to fall back on, but i'm getting through. a huge part of my life is gone, and that is rough. i'll make it through though.

my grandfather is in the hospital; he has surgery tomorrow: a triple bypass for his heart. i'm quite nervous about that. he had a heart attack last week, while i was still in belize. as soon as i returned from central america (after an extra night in charlotte due to all sorts of problems), i went to the hospital. he looked relatively well, but that does little to calm me.

in case i've yet to rave about it, belize was amazing. snorkeling was incredible (i hope to have pictures developed by this weekend from that). my mind is still blown from that and from the cave and ruins. i really want to go back right before graduation, and i think that i might be able to. i spoke to a girl at the belize airport (sarah?) who stayed in san ignacio at a place with hot running water for only $10US. i could definitely afford that. if anyone is interested in a trip like that, let me know.

my mind is focused on not so positive aspects of my life that i don't want to talk about on here, so i should bid you all adieu. wish me luck in securing a good internship. if anyone wants to send money or food, the address for that is:

75 S. Reynolds St.
Apt. G-110
Alexandria, VA 22304.

okay, that's about enough for now. i hope all is well with everyone. here are a few pictures i took in belize:

1. a view of the macal river 2. part of the ancient maya city of xunantinich

3. a skull in the cave of the stone sepulcher. 4. a view just off the coast of san pedro island
