♠ Character Info
Name: Kronk Pepikrankenitz
Movie/series: The Emperor's New Groove series
Year/Position: Staff (Teacher: Culinary and Pastry Arts and assistant mess hall chef)
Non/Speaking Animal/Companion(if any): I considered Bucky for this position, but since he's not quite Kronk's pet, I decided against it.
Powers: None to speak of at the moment, but can make one heck of a tuna surprise. And tow a rowboat with his teeth!
Canon history: Right Here!
AU history: The son of an affluent and proud family in Kuzcotopia (eventually known as Peru in the modern era), high-achieving Kronk's father only wanted his son to make enough money to live in a big house and raise a large family. But Kronk's passion was for cooking, the one profession his papi had no respect for, and it drove a wedge between father and son.

In reaction to his father's rejection, Kronk struck up a partnership with Yzma, Emperor Kuzco's adviser, during his post-collegiate internship at the royal palace. As Yzma's assistant, Kronk's job was to keep her happy and take care of all the little annoying details Yzma didn't want to deal with - like being polite to the house servants and maintaining diplomacy among the visiting courtiers. When Yzma decided to murder the Emperor, Kronk went along with it to placate her, and - to his guilt and shame - because he liked the notion of being powerful. The entire incident was fraught with emotional peril for Kronk, which manifested itself in the form of two "shoulder" spirits; one angel and one devil, each set to lead him down a different moral path. Ultimately, it took Yzma's disparaging him as a 'big, stupid monkey' for Kronk to break away from her, save the day, and learn to follow the tune of his own drummer.

He became both a leader of a Junior Chipmunk Scouts chapter and the head chef and delivery boy for Mudka's Meat Hut; these events and his sociable nature also made him many friends in the village, who liked him for his caring nature and his marvelous cooking. All had been going well for a full year, until Yzma reared her ugly head once more. Convincing Kronk to con the elderly members of the village out of their savings, he barely ended up saving the day and ridding the village of Yzma once again.

Thanks to his involvement in Yzma's stunt, his status in the village was already shaky - yet when his Papi announced he was coming to town for a visit, the entire village pitched in to make Kronk appear a success (still smarting from an abbreviated romance with fellow troop leader Ms. Birdwell, Kronk lacked the family and wife he'd told his father he possessed). Kronk's desperate attempts to please his Papi ultimately resulted in mayhem - and the entirety of Mudka's being flooded with overheated cheese fondue.

Kronk had been down in the dumps ever since that unfortunate incident. Denied his father's respect and enduring his new position as the town laughingstock, he was still trying his best to be a good guy, even though the temptation to return to his semi-evil ways occasionally prickled his conscious.

When the Mists approached, Kuzco reluctantly gathered the citizens of his kingdom and took them to the highest peak in the Andes Mountains, which is where the letter to the Academy reached the group. While the rest of the town was skeptical about Kronk's worth as a teacher, Kronk saw the situation as an opportunity to start fresh, win back the respect of the empire, and finally get a 'thumbs up' from Papi.

Personality: The biggest mistake others make upon meeting Kronk for the first time is assuming he's dumb - not simply stupid, but too mentally infirm to live, breathe, or eat. While he's actually not the sharpest knife in the drawer, Kronk actually lives with his head in the clouds most of the time - when he comes back down to earth he displays intelligence, bravery, and desires on-par with your average human being. He's often the victim of his own runaway enthusiasm, as well, which leads him to enact moments of childlike exuberance. However, he occasionally shows flashes of sarcastic wit, and while he has a problem distinguishing right from wrong sometimes, he's not very successful at causing genuine harm to others though, when provoked, he will do what he must to defend himself. He's extremely responsible, trustworthy and capable, and is particularly good at caring for children.

Physically strong enough to tow a boat across a lake with his teeth, Kronk is a high-achiever physically; several episodes of The Emperor's New School show him to be the sort of athlete who wins gold medals without breaking a sweat. He's also multi-lingual and very gifted in animal-based languages, able to speak squirrel and, in some cases, chipmunk and leopard fluently, which leads him to have an affinity with animals. He has a tendency to fawn over and baby his pets, while treating children as equals. Yet he's humble when it comes to his abilities - these are simply skills he possesses - something he happens to do and do well.

While jocular and friendly most of the time, Kronk has a competitive side. His worst quality, however, would be his indecisiveness; combining this with an innate naivety and desperation to please has resulted in his nearly being killed numerous times. Kronk's deeply desires to please others and yet knows when to draw the line when things finally go too far; he does have a moral compass buried down deep, it just takes awhile to unearth it. He loves making and keeping friends, and that's his true, driving ambition as a person; because of this, he's highly social and has a finger in every pie socially; he knows who everyone in a given location is on a personal basis, and is often given to gossiping with his closest friends.

Greatest Fear: Returning to Yzma's clutches as an obedient servant of evil once more; being completely unable to please his Papi is up there, but now that he's lived through that losing the friendship and respect he's gained independent of her employ definitely trumps it.
Has your character been at the Academy before/ does your character remembering being at the Academy before?: Nope!
What are you plans with this character?: Kronk's truly going to see the Academy as a second chance to be a good guy and will do whatever it takes to maintain his new moral equilibrium; he'll be making friends, communing with nature, learning how to cook with all of the exotic-to-him ingredients in the Academy's kitchen and honing his newfound sense of independence.

♠ Writing
Third person writing sample:

The Academy's kitchen is filled with the toasty, wheaten scent of hot bread baking. Kneading a fresh stack of dough, Kronk is heavily-dusted with flour and humming happily to himself, working over the gluten-loaded bread until it grows shiny and elastic between his palms.

It gets a half-hour’s rising, which is enough time for Kronk to reflect on his new life. He’s still humming over his breakfast, and that humming is a dead giveaway to his emotional state: for the first time since he’s arrived here, Kronk is truly happy with his lot in life. There are a lot of people here who’re like him: confused, skilled, cheerful, genuinely happy with themselves and with their new homes. Unlike most of them, Kronk has only a handful of people he misses from back home. As happy as he is, he can call them all to mind immediately; Chaca, Tipo and Yupi; Pacha and Chica; even Kuzco.

And Miss Birdwell.

He immediately distracts himself from her memory, turning back toward the pantry for a new ingredient. "Huh. Wonder what these’re called." He squints at the box, trying to make out the lettering on the tiny red package in his dough-crusted hand. "Ray-sins? Wonder what those are.” He could look them up, but that would involve leaving his bread, and a Junior Chipmunk Scout never abandons a task half-completed. “Must be a fancy new baking thing," he mutters, sprinkling them heavily into the yeast dough. He feels a spark of relief as he cuts them into the dough; they look like the sultanas he’s familiar with back at home. Then he cuts the dough into individual pieces, bathing each in an egg solution before returning them to a warming pan.

Just before putting them in the oven, he kneels by the pile of dough and whispers. "All right, little guys. Rise up nice and big and you'll get to be a bunch of breakfast rolls!"

He doesn’t mind being known as the sort of guy who gives pep talks to breakfast food as he pushes. Even yeast needs a little bit of love.

[Have a close-up on an eyeball. It slowly pans backward, to reveal an angular face and dark hair.]

Must be some kinda weird mirror.

[He licks his teeth and fixes his hair in the reflection gleaming up off his communicator. Then he starts thinking...]

...You aren't a magic mirror, are you?

[He squints and shakes the device lightly.]

I hope not. I’m staying as far away from potions and magic doohickies as I can after what happened to the emperor. Oh boy, was that a big mess! I don’t wanna turn into a llama like he did. We just barely got him back in the right body.

[Suspiciously, he squints at the screen.]

Yzma, you aren't in there...

...Are you?
