BOOK REVIEW

THE IRON KING - JULIE KAGAWA

BOOK RATING : 3/5

While this book was very imaginative it did lack some structural elements that would have made the story flow better. The lack of them almost made me put the book down because I was so frustrated that I couldn't really enjoy what I was reading. Luckily, the characters were entertaining enough to persuade me otherwise.

The developing love between Meghan and Ash kept my attention, that's for sure. Their attraction for each other was painfully obvious from the beginning but it was especially intense because they were from different fey courts. What is even more pleasing is that when Ash finally tells Meghan why he and Puck are always trying to kill each other, he also tells her that he wouldn't have been so sad that his love had died if he had known at the time he would have met her in the future. I don't know why I get so giddy over fake relationships but I guess it's the romantic in me.

The fey world is actually very confusing. Apparently if you strike a deal, or make a vow, you're not allowed to break it. You literally can't! By the way, that is why Puck and Ash are doomed to be enemies...because of an oath that Ash made when he was angry. It's actually quite sad. Ash doesn't want to kill his best friend...but his hasty words made sure of it.

The book sort of reminded me of a cross between Alice and Wonderland and Midsummer Night's Dream. Two of my favorite stories ever! Not only did it have all the characters from Midsummer Night's Dream but it also had the character of Grimalkin, who was exactly like the Cheshire Cat. He even turned invisible like him and did the eyes popping out of nowhere thing to scare Meghan out of her wits in the beginning. Grimalkin was the main cause of my laughter during this story. Because he's a cat! (you'll only get that last line if you read the book ;) )

I am interested to see what is going to happen now that Meghan killed the Iron King. What new threat will take his place? I also want to know what happens to Meghan's family now that she's going back to the Fey world with Ash. I'm sitting on pins and needles, also hoping that this next story will flow better than the first!
