BOOK REVIEW
CITY OF BONES - CASSANDRA CLARE
I rate this FANTASTIC book a 5 out of 5!
I really really love the shadow world. It is so fascinating and thrilling. I love how the story of Clary's family was set up. It was kept hidden for a long time and I constantly wondered if Clary really was half mundane or if maybe Luke was her a father but I also had the sinking feeling that maybe Valentine was and it turned out that was the case. Valentine, the child-murdering shadowhunter turns out to be her father. What was even more of a shock was finding out that Jace, the boy she'd fallen in love with and who had fallen in love with her turned out to be Clary's sister. There was a warning from Dorothae, the fortune-teller, saying that he'd fall in love with the wrong person, but I didn't want to believe they were brother and sister because they seemed to have a connection that went beyond sibling love. The first thought that popped into my head when they both found out was that they'd have a very awakward conversation in the morning.
My favorite scene was the showdown between the Vampires and the Werewolves. It's a very common thing for a series to have Vampires and Werewolves that hate each other's guts. In this instance, the werewolves wouldn't have broken any peace treaty they had with them if Clary's life hadn't been in danger. There is another thing that shocked me, the fact that Luke turns out to be a werewolf. It turned out very well for Clary in the end because not only did it remind her that downworlders are not evil just because they are different but it also gave her a helpful ally to storm Valentine's place to rescue Jace and their mother.
I felt really bad for Simon, Clary's best friend. He was so looked down upon by the shadohunters because he was a mundie that they didn't think he'd be of any use in a fight. As it turns out, he's the one that saves them all from being ripped apart by a Greater Demon. Using Alic's bow he breaks the glass on the roof and makes the demon's physical form melt in the sunlight. If there was anyone who should drink from the mortal cup to become a shadowhunter, it should be Simon.
Alec and Isabelle are quite the pair of siblings. They're like polar opposites. Alec is sensitive while Isabelle is extremely outgoing and adventurous. I can't say I liked either of them in the beggining but I grew to love them eventually. Especially Alec, who really hadn't meant to be so cruel to Clary. He was just a boy in love with another boy after all, and ashamed to admit it. I actually feel sort of sorry for him because I'm not sure if Jace has those sort of feelings for him
What I do hope for, now that I know Jace and Clary are brother and sister, is that Clary will develop some feelings for Simon. There is a hint of it throughout the book that she doesn't feel like acknowleding I think. She gets extremely jealous when he starts hanging around Isabelle and when he kisses her cheek at the end she feels a shiver so there is something there. There needs to be some sort of epic romance between those two.
Hodge being a traitor pissed me off more than I would like to admit. I see why the characters pitied him but if it were me I wouldn't pity him at all. He betrayed those that he'd sworn to protect just so he wouldn't be cursed any longer. It doesn't seem right to me in the long run seeing as how now Valentine had the Mortal cup and will go around trying to make child shadowhunters and knowingly sacrificing the ones that aren't made for the shadow world.
What I'm looking forward to the most is Clary and Jace's mother waking up from her coma. The book ended with them traveling to the hospital on a flying demon bike but they didn't show them at the hospital. I'm hoping that Clary's idea of Jace being around her, after she had thought him long dead, will urge her to wake up.
I reccomend this book and all the rest of the "Mortal instrument series" including the other series I'm reading involving the Shadow world "The Inferior Devices" Clare is a master storyteller and I am so captivated by each and every part of these series.
