Nazi smackdown, by J.R.R. Tolkien.
In 1937 a German publisher was interested in producing a German translation of Tolkien’s classic The Hobbit for publication in that country. Of course, at the time, the Nazis were in power there, and the publication of anything written by Jews was prohibited. The Nazis were not sure what to make of Tolkien’s name, so this publisher wrote him a letter asking about his ethnic background. I love Tolkien’s reply:
I regret that I am not clear as to what you intend by arisch. I am not of Aryan extraction; that is Indo-iranian; as far as I am aware none of my ancestors spoke Hindustani, Persian, Gypsy, or any related dialects. But if I am to understand that you are enquiring whether I am of Jewish origin, I can only reply that I regret that I appear to have no ancestors of that gifted people.
To which I wish he had appended, “And also, fuck off.”
