Today sucked

Difficult day/night at work. Very busy this afternoon, and at five, when I usually go home, it was still so busy that I had to stick around. Then the six o’clock driver didn’t show up, so I had to stay ‘til they could get someone else, which turned out to happen, oh, several hours later. It was a twelve hour shift, friends, and busier than shit every second, and since I hadn’t known it was coming I haven’t eaten today and now probably won’t.
Worst of all, two separate times I got stuck on the phones for thirty minutes or so. We have four phone lines, and all four were people on hold constantly, and as soon as I’d finish one line and move on to one of the other three, the one I’d just finished would ring again. The boss told me to call a driver and ask him to come in early, and I seriously could not get a free line to call out so I could do that. Every time I grabbed the phone to dial it would ring.
I’m pretty laid back, as you guys know, and pretty hard to rattle. I can handle anything work throws at me…except that. The phone is my Achilles Heel, and when it starts ringing off the hook I get a little freaked out. I’m still a little freaked out, more than an hour later, so even though I am beat to shit and ache kind of everywhere, I am going to pour myself a very serious whiskey and go for a walk.
I’ve started a new thing where I sometimes make a short playlist, maybe an hour or two long, just of the songs I want to hear on a particular occasion. I save them in a folder I call “Immediate,” and the title of each is the day on which it was made. It seems to me that I might sometimes want to look back and see what I was thinking or how I was feeling at particular times in my life, and the music I listen to reflects that.
The playlist “2010/04/30” is to calm my mind and let me sleep after I’ve been on a quick lap around the Fan. I have lost playlists before, as I’ve written about on here, so I include it just in case, under a cut.

Air, “Run”
Axiom Funk, “If 6 Was 9”
Samuel Barber, “Adagio for Strings” (performed by the Boston Symphony Orchestra)
Billy Bragg and Wilco, “Blood of the Lamb”
Julee Cruise, “The Nightingale”
Bob Dylan, “Tomorrow is a Long Time”
Ben Folds Five, “Brick”
Lisa Hannigan, “The Man I Love”
Iron & Wine, “Passing Afternoon”
James, “Five-O”
Billy Joel, “She’s Always a Woman”
Massive Attack, “Paradise Circus” and “Teardrop”
Mates of State, “Like U Crazy”
Mazzy Star, “Look On Down From the Bridge”
Mono, “Life in Mono”
Morphine, “The Night”
Alan Parsons, “Eye in the Sky”
Piano Magic, “Disaffected”
Pink Floyd, “Goodbye, Blue Sky”
Bruce Springsteen, “The Streets of Philadelphia”
Sting’s live version of “Message in a Bottle” from the Secret Policeman’s Ball
Supertramp, “The Logical Song”
Violet Indiana, “Purr La Perla”
Gillian Welch, “Black Star”
Dar Williams, “It Happens Every Day”
Lucinda Williams, “Jackson”

That comes in at just under two hours, so hopefully by around two I’ll be sane and calm and ready for sleep. Hope all is well out there in internetland, and love to each of you.
