I was in the middle of the city (a real city, not Huntington), and someone had CGIed a temple into the middle of the city, right across from my apartment. I could stand on my balcony and look down upon it. It was very nice. But the image the CGI guy wanted was of a temple so old that there was no footage of it, or even a recent photograph. So he used a very old photograph. I guess he greenscreened out the block across the street and superimposed the picture of the temple, and it was so old that it was all slightly out-of-focus, and all sepia-tinted, and nothing inside it could move.
I thought it was beautiful, so I went to get Amy, to share the image with her. But I guess it took longer to get to her place and bring her back than I expected. By the time we returned, the grass and so forth had started to grow through the floor of the picture, and what had been sepia-toned and static suddenly had a layer of green, and lots of bugs. It made the image look wrinkled and false. It ruined the effect.
“No, but you should have seen how it looked before,” but I couldn’t give her the picture, couldn’t make her see it. How do you share an image that’s gone forever?
I woke up feeling disappointed, and came to work.
