GAAAAHHHH!!!! I missed National Grammar DayI had no idea there was such a thing, but there is, and it's March 4th. It's over. I'm gonna lie my head down in shame. I feel badly, and more importantly, I am nauseous.
I put four grammatical errors in the last two sentences of the post, and two in my response to you (not counting odd word formations like "gonna," which I'm prone to). It's a puzzle! Yes, "nauseous" is incorrect. This one surprised me, and I only learned it yesterday. Apparently everybody, including me, misuses that word. When we say "nauseous" we really mean "nauseated," and the actual meaning of "nauseous" we express with "nauseating." But Grammar Girl says that this is beyond common vs. accepted usage, that it's so prevalent that in twenty years or so even dictionaries will give up. Which I think is pretty cool, and I'm gonna continue misusing it. P.S. Did you notice the joke in the song title, too?
Let's see: --lie down my head --feel badly --importantly --nauseous --you and me --hung (your all-time pet peeve, I believe)
Did I miss any? I overlooked the song the first time. I really hate songs that incorrectly use "I" instead of "me" (and the like), just for the sake of rhyme. Can't think of any at the moment, but I will....
Actually, "importantly" is probably my all-time least favorite, just because it's not only wrong but ugly-sounding. Still, "hung" is also both, and I really hate it, too. Which reminds me: forgot to point out "thirdly," but that's just as ugly.
re: songs--Grammar Girl did one where she was explaining how the Celine Dion song "You and I" is correct (because the line continues "...were born to fly," which is atrocious but also makes "you and I" the subject), whereas the...well, I forget which teeny-bopper did this one, but there's a song that's big now called "Between You and I," which is wrong. So there's one for you.
