That's been floating around the SF con circle for years, and I think I first ran into it sometime in the late 80s.

Also, the good advice that "food is sleep", meaning that if you can't sleep, you can keep yourself going by eating more. This is true, and useful.

That only works for so long. After awhile you just need to get some sleep.

Most people can't get to REM sleep in 3 hours, since most people take 60 minutes to "ramp up" to the normal sleep cycle, which is then approximately 180 minutes long with REM at the end. But non-REM sleep is still extremely valuable.

I've heard this as the 5/2 rule - you need 5 hours of sleep and 2 good meals, or 2 hours of sleep and 5 good meals.

When doing the big cons (aka GenCon), I tried to do all 4 slots in one day and regretted it.

My rules for conning are:

- Skip a slot if the games are scheduled back-to-back
- Always eat one sit-down meal a day (and not the dining room at Taco Bell)
- Shower every morning, and a quick rinse before bed
- Never share a room with anyone likely to pull an all-nighter--and therefore would want to use your room should they get kicked out of whever they are playing...
