I thought internet access would be hard to come by here, but boy was I wrong. Alex and I arrived in Phnom Penh at 12:30 pm into extreme heat. We went around by motorbike to a few places until we settled on our current guesthouse accomodation, shit-smelling shower and all.
Soon after we went to the royal palace. I had to buy a t-shirt to wear over my tanktop because sleeves were mandatory. It was very beautiful and peaceful there, lots of statues of buddah and pretty plants with leaves that pretended to be flowers. The heat was a bit extreme and we had to stop often to collect ourselves but it was definitely worth it.
Next we went to Tuol Sleng, the genocide museum. It was formerly a Khmer Rouge S-21 Prison. Approximately 10,000 adults and 2000 children were tortured and killed there. Walking through and learning about all this and looking at the pictures of the people either before, during or after torture was devastating. At one point I just started to sob and had to go be by myself for a while to get a grip. Twice since then I've cried too, it was just horrible.
There were guest books that people had written in, with a variety of comments. Someone had written something about having faith in God or something to that effect and all I wanted to do was to write that places like this are proof enough that there is no God or at least not one that is worth worshipping.
