Here are some reflections/ Pearls of Wisdom that have formed as a result of my trip with my Dad across the States.
1) Use Reason, First. -- This is in large part in reference to the arena of romance. Many young men can allow themselves to ignore the facts.
2) At this point, the sky can still be the limit, if you focus -- This is half my Dad's message to me and half the part that stuck. Today, I was relaxing a bit and watching the videos on sabres.nhl.com. One of the things that the coaches emphasized was that once players understand that their careers are in their own hands and they desire nothing except hockey all the time, you know they are going to take off. To a very career-minded chemist like me, that message has particular resonance.
3) Non only is happiness overrated, but teaching children to seek happiness all the time misses the value of having a happiness as the natural result of a life well-lived. So many of the lost children we see in college grew up being told that they were special. If there was a problem, their parents would fix it. Perhaps, their parents did not give them any criticism to protect them. However, this is short-sighted. If you do not inoculate children from the setbacks and malaises of life, they will not be able to deal with them as adults.
4) Although I still don't know how I feel about psychology as a field and I tend to be on the nature side of nature vs. nurture, it does seem that you can explain a lot about a person from their parenting.
