This time the paper she was holding was waved at him, "Jeez, that doesn't sound good. If you came up with some super sneaky scheme and didn't even tell me about it! C'mon, we're supposed to be closer than that!"
Ed sighed and scratched at the base of his braid, absently debating distracting Tomo. It was never that hard to do, really.
"Tell me~ I won't really be mad, you'll just owe me one! 'Cause there are some really weird questions you got here. Like the one about how far you think the 'no sex' rule lets you go, and how far this guy would try and take it anyway! You gotta admit, that's pretty weird, you hate it when people talk to you about this kinda stuff!"
Probably, Ed thought, now would be a good time to introduce her to Slippy. He hadn't yet because he wasn't sure how long a living frog made out of chocolate could survive around Tomo. But he didn't really think she'd hurt him, and that would definitely take her mind of the papers long enough to get them out of her sight.
"And then there is this one about what foods you'd prepare for a date, haha! You even said that if they answer "the strawberries" the automatically fail. Jeez, if I didn't know better I'd say this was some kind of blind date interview! Did you know they do that a lot back home? It's called 'omiai kekkon', but it's not really an arranged marriage anymore, just a set up! Is that what you're doing?"
Ed sighed. "Yeah."
"Matchmaker E~do~su~ke!" Tomo singsonged, bouncing up and edging smugly into Ed's personal space. "I can't believe you left me out of that, you really owe me, Ed. So! Who's the lucky couple, you can tell me!"
Rather used to Tomo mushing into his personal bubble, Ed merely scoots over, gives her a significant side glance, and dots. "..."
"Argh, that's no fair, Itachi hasn't finished teaching me dot speak yet! Give me a hint!"
"It's supposed to be a secret," Ed put her off, torn between telling her outright and getting it over with, and seeing if she'd ever figure it out.
Tomo frowned at him for a moment then sat back and held the paper up in front of her. "I got it, Fushigi Mystery, right? I can figure this out!"
"Got it," Ed responded, and went back to grading the papers. Though by now he was really pretty sure Sano would be fine. He was only about halfway done, but he'd liked Sano before this, and more importantly, Tomo had. Even from the beginning the papers had been little more than perfunctory. Mostly. It still hadn't hurt to put the fear of automail wielding alchemists into Sano while he was moving their relationship along (Tomo apparently hadn't gotten to the part where he asked "How many different ways do you think I can kill you if you ever make her cry?")
"You know..." next to him, Tomo's voice rose a bit from where she'd been softly muttering to herself as she read. "Now that I think about it, this handwriting looks pretty familiar. And it has to be someone from Japan. A guy, right? Unless you're setting up lesbians, hah! No way."
Ed rolled his eyes, it's not like he had anything against lesbians. Or women in general. Just a healthy fear. "You're right so far."
"Well, I know that." Tomo replied, nudging into him again. "That's why I said it. Anyway, there are a lot of guys from Japan here though. Let's see... couldn't be Ueki. You can tell just by the answers. And no way Robert's writing is this messy. It's not Itachi because there aren't enough dots."
Ed circled another spelling error.
"Eeed~"
"What?"
"You're supposed to tell me how I'm doing!"
"I thought you didn't need hints!"
"I was kidding, jeez! Cut me some slack here."
"Fine," Ed gave up on grading entirely and snapped the cap back on his marker, "You're right, it's not Itachi, Robert or Ueki."
"Like I said," Tomo agreed, nodding confidently before going back to studying the 'clue'.
