Personality; To be blunt, Shu is socially awkward. He never knows what to say to other people and that's a trait of his that he acknowledges himself. He tries hard to be socially perceptive but it always ends up in failure. An example of this was when awkwardly shunned Souta by mistake. He has poor judgment when it comes to handling people. When Shu talks to people he gets extremely nervous. He tries to hide his nervousness by going along with what other people are saying. Shu lacks social experience. Prior to the series Shu admits that he makes friends by forcing himself to speak with his classmates. Overtime he learned how to open up to people. By episode eight he complained to Souta about his lack of tact and consideration for others. Before Shu was never the type of guy who had the courage to voice his complaints. By staying with the Undertakers he managed to find will power he’s never used before.
Sometimes he'll say what he's thinking out loud. This is generally a bad thing because it can potentially upset everyone around him. Before his mock battle he carelessly insulted the Undertakers by questioning Gai’s authority. Arugo forced him to apologize for his carelessness. He prefers to avoid social interaction because he knows that his way of thinking is out of step with everyone else’s. Shu had an awful habit of never making eye contact with people. This changes when he meets Inori Yuzuriha. She taught him how to look into people's eyes properly.
Despite his social awkwardness Shu is extremely perceptive about the world around him. He is rather knowledgeable about the dispute between the GHQ and the Undertakers. He's good at sorting out information and making connections between people and events. Shu quickly realized that Gai could see people’s “voids”. He immediately realized that Gai’s operation in Roppongi would have failed if he couldn’t see Daryl’s void.
Shu's rather sensitive. One of Shu’s classmates called him a moron and he was hurt from their commentary. He’s easily hurt by other people's comments. Shu easily gets depressed by it and he doesn’t have high self-esteem. He hates himself for simple things and he gets stuck in unhealthy depression cycles. Later on Inori points out that she dislikes seeing Shu put himself down. Thanks to Inori, he eventually makes an effort to fix his flaws.
Since his mother (Haruka Ouma) only comes home once a week Shu’s proficient in accomplishing simple house chores. He doesn’t mind cleaning or cooking. For the most part Shu lived alone so he’s capable of taking care of himself. His father died during the Lost Christmas incident and he doesn’t know him very well. Despite that Shu highly respect his father and visits his grave from time to time. Shu’s mother doesn’t talk about Sephirah Genomics at home so he’s completely ignorant about Void Genome research. After utilizing the Void Genome Shu started doing things that were very unlike him. In Episode one he destroyed an Endlave to protect Inori.
Normally he wouldn’t do something that reckless but his desire to protect Inori was so great that it allowed him to overcome his limits. During the course of the canon he develops affectionate feelings towards Inori. He nearly confessed his feelings to her but he eventually discovered that Gai was just instructing Inori to get close to Shu. Shu’s the type of character who’s easily exploited. Gai could tell that he liked Inori so he used her to complete the operation successfully. Around episode four Inori disobeyed orders to save Shu from the enemy. He was so happy she came back for him that he wanted to get closer to her. In order to accomplish this he underwent vigorous training so he could join the undertakers. He gained the Undertakers member’s respect by dodging Ayase’s Endlave and passing his mock battle with his own power.
Unfortunately Shu is very dense. He called Yahiro by his alias and didn’t expect him to get offended by it. Even the class president Hare calls him out on his density at some point. He’s rather close minded and he assumes that people “follow those with confidence”. Shu thinks he’s young and immature. He knows that he still has room for growing up. Ayase tries to encourage him before his mock battle ultimately strengthening his resolve to become a better person.
Shu values his peaceful life. Tsutsugami Gai asked him to join the Undertakers but he declined it at first because he wanted to keep his everyday life. He only participated in the Undertaker missions because he wanted to protect what was important to him. He avoids conflicts whenever possible. During episode three Inori wanted to kill Yahiro but Shu kept telling her to put the gun down. He doesn’t believe in sacrificing lives to gain victory. He always told Gai he disagreed with that line of thinking. He thinks that it’s “messed up” to sacrifice lives for another purpose. He’s a kind and compassionate person at his core.
Overall Shu is tremendously polite towards others. He never forgets his manners and it actually very difficult for him to be rude. Inori asked him to stop being so polite towards her but he couldn’t bring himself to do it. Sometimes he can even come off as over apologetic. He apologizes for nearly everything. He had to look for a pair of shears in one of his missions but he kept apologizing for using other people’s voids. Void Genome is a special power created by Sephirah Genomics which allows humans to trespass into the territory of God. When Shu uses the Genome’s power he is forced to touch the hearts of people. After realizing this he wanted to learn more about the world around him.
