Hello! I'm really sorry for taking, omg, nearly two months to get back to you. School sort of sucked me in and chewed on my bones. D: I completely understand if you want to discontinue the conversation, so don't worry if you don't want to reply.
(In all fairness, I think it's really, really difficult to write convincing TOS Kirk, especially around his love interests). And "Prime Directive" does sound pretty kickass! I love stories in which the crew's loyalty to each other really gets to shine, and this sounds like one of them.
I understand that writing convincing behavior for TOS!Kirk around his love interests probably isn't the most easiest - I'm just really harsh over this because it wasn't really integral to the plot. You could have left out his love story altogether (same goes with Sulu's) and the main plot with Spock wouldn't have been affected. So, I'm condemning it because the decision to include these side plots was solely because the writer felt it was ABSOLUTELY needed and then went and bungled it up. On top of that, Kirk isn't IN the majority of the story due to the ~plot device~ and his personality was alright when he wasn't mooning so I feel like this knowledge just makes it worse.
Omg, I'm just going to stop now before I just start ranting.
And yes! Prime Directive was an absolute joy to read, I had to stop several times just to flail. I love it when people remember the other members of the crew and write them as convincing human beings (or Vulcans, in Spock's case.) <3
The thing with Prime Directive is there's a love interest in this book too and I'm bringing this up because, in comparison to Entropy Effect, Kirk with this woman is absolutely spot on. He's this big, adorable moron around her and he wants to carry her books when she can carry them just fine, thank you. The difference between this Kirk and Entropy!Kirk is he doesn't obsess over her. He has a life to live and yes, when she's around he's like ":D Hi" but it's never a fixation. Not only that, but the woman is written convincingly.
like you said, guilty pleasure - there is something intensely satisfying about knowing it exists in print
Hahaha, YES. It's that bad fic that everyone secretly has saved in their favorites which they read for those moments that make them flail even though the rest of the fic just makes them CRINGE.
But in all honesty, you're right, it really is a really bad harlequin romance novel to the point where Spock goes as far to tell Jim, "YOU ARE MINE," the two of them keep alternating between pining, yelling and staring, and Kirk keeps referring to another character as "Romeo."
JFC, it's Pride and Prejudice IN SPACE.
So I can't remember if it was New Voyages 1 or 2, but I adore the story Nichelle Nichols herself wrote in which Uhura clearly ships K/S while flirting shamelessly with and/or mothering both of them. It's glorious and totally my head-canon. Also, I know there's this other story in which Spock basically says to Kirk "let's stay on this planet forever, just you and me, we don't need anyone else" while under the influence of something. Can't remember which volume!
LOL, oh God. You are referring to New Voyages 2 and it's the first short story there called "Surprise!" I have a second-hand embarrassment squick so I had to read that story in parts (and I still plan to go back to read that all the way through) but yes, it's hilarious.
And akgjskgkd. THE SECOND STORY YOU'RE REFERRING TO. OH MY GOD. I really, absolutely adored that short story. Because everyone was completely in character! Spock was his cool, logical self up until a certain point and only turns to Jim and says "we don't need the others" when he's under the influence of the ~plot device~ so he's not in complete control of himself, but he's still saying exactly what he wants. So, yes, I may or may not have flailed like a crazy person over that story. and I may or may not reread it from time to time. That short story is in Voyages 1 and it's called "Winged Dreamers." :)
In any case, I'm really glad this rec list was helpful to you. I plan to update it with a description for New Voyages 2 and also one for The Kobayashi Maru, would you like me to give you a poke when that's complete? Regardless, sorry again for the delay!
