CHARACTER:
Name: Sheik
Source: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Personality
Sheik’s personality, conversely, is one driven by duty. He does what he has to, regardless of how he regards it. Indeed, he’s already broken several of what he’d consider as moral standards in the service of Ganondorf. He’s not afraid to act in a way people may find repellant or shocking - and, worse yet, when these acts are complete, he shrugs them off with a cool regard, free of guilt or remorse. That does not mean he enjoys it, no, it does not mean it is not wrong to him, but he simply cannot allow himself to balk in any way. ‘The end justifies the means’ is a last resort to Zelda - to Sheik it is simply how life is. Because of this, he may easily come across as cold or callous - and he will do nothing to argue such perceptions.

Callous, perhaps, is true enough. Cold, indeed, at times. But really, Sheik is someone who feels passionately, seldom though he may show real emotion. He throws himself into his work, and will fight to the death as he must. He will scorn those who are cowardly or stupid, rash or foolish, those who will not adhere so closely to duty as he does. His respect is difficult to win, and few bother trying - which, again, is fine by him. He is not a man to act out of warmth or care, for the most part, and for the most part speaks only when he must.

The persona he presents to those around him is that mysterious, enigmatic minstrel that Link saw - the one that knows a lot more than he’s letting on, and it’s definitely a lot more than you know. He can be charming, in so far as he has to be, but is unlikely to talk much about himself or anything close to heart. He tends to keep people at arm’s length, dancing -around them with fair words and an elusive half-smile.

His respect, however, when won, is fierce. Music and stories tend to help him warm to another, strength, courage, and determination deemed qualities he admires in others. When he does form a bond with someone, it is usually unbreakable, and he will do anything to keep it together, do anything for the one he deems worth it. As far as duty allows, that is. If duty dictates he slit his best friend’s throat, he’ll do it without hesitation.

Overall, Sheik veils himself with his mystery, as much a mask as the cowl he shrouds half his face with. And, to all extents and purposes, he is content being left like that. He would be the first to describe himself as a pawn.

Powers
Sheik can switch to Zelda at will (though that is more her power than his). He is stronger than one would expect and far faster and more agile, able to disappear in a flash of light to reappear closeby. He can wield some forms of illusion, taxing though these may be, and can move through shadows, nigh on undetectable. His music holds power, a tool which he can use in various ways.

Biggest Fears
Also failure, of faltering in his duty or to his own expectations. He also, however, has a fear of boe which can range between irritating and close to crippling. Sheik, of course, will not readily admit to either of these to anyone else, as fearlessness and courage are ingrained into the Sheikah mindset.

History
Sheik’s first life was over quickly, and took place during one of the many wars fought for the Triforce. It was of no great purpose, his was not a name passed down, and that was why his form, his being was chosen as the disguise for Zelda. Thus began his second life, if you could call it that, for he had scarce any memory of the life he’d lived a few centuries before. In fact, he did not even know he held the Princess within him. As far as he knew, he’d been sick, and was only now recovered, which was the reason for his addled mind and memories.

He swore false fealty to Ganondorf, impressing the Evil King with his skill and his apparent loyalty until he was considered part of his inner circle. Like this, he was able to report back to Impa when necessary. His real work, however, began when the Hero of Time, Link, awakened from his seven year sleep. Sheik was to play the part of the enigmatic and mysterious guide. It was a role he was made for, and he balanced between loyally serving Ganondorf and pushing the Hero on well. Over the brief time they knew each other, he may have begun to regard Link as a sort-of friend, even if he thought little of the Hero in the beginning.

In the desert, where the penultimate stage of Link’s quest was situated, he offered to lead the Hero through the Haunted Wasteland. Here, he pretended to hand him over to Gerudo troops, both to convince Ganondorf of his loyalty and to get Link through the fortress. Link freed himself, and here Sheik was revealed for the ‘traitor’ he was, and he fled with Link further into the desert.

But this life ended even quicker than the first. He was killed by Ganondorf’s surrogate mothers and loyal subjects, the Sorceress Sisters - or, rather, he was killed by Koume after injuring Kotake. Engulfed in flames, Sheik took his body to the Desert Colossus, the Spirit Temple, to try and save him. Here, Sheik taught him his final melody, and pushed him on into the temple.

He believed then that he was freed, clarity and understanding coming in those final few moments.

Apparently, however, that was only a passing hope.
