Adolescence: Prologue

This is one of a series of prompts! The rest can be found here!

Time ran so very slowly in the Nexus. Ruto’d gotten in trouble frequently for her little soirées. A few hours asking questions or simply visiting and she’d lost the entire day in her own world. It was why she did her best not to go there too often. That, and the portals were so hard to find. You had to listen very hard to hear the music that let you know one was around, then follow it wherever it might go.

Sometimes you had to follow it too far. Any portal in Hyrule Castle Town was beyond her reach. That man had consolidated his power there. She and her father stood against the devil, so far successfully, but it didn’t mean that they could enter the town. It seemed a terrible shame to her; the people living under him could hardly be grateful and would surely relish the chance to get rid of him.

That wasn’t an option, though. She had an agreement with her father, one she intended to honor - they made no concessions to Ganondorf on either side. They would not give into his demands, but until they knew they could win they would not attack him directly, nor do anything to antagonize him. It was why she’d been spending so much time up at Death Mountain. The Gorons’ support might be what it took to assure victory.

She could bring them in, too. All she needed was to be able to go there as herself, Princess of the Zoras, and offer them a treaty. She had to be able to do more than just sneak in the middle of the night and have casual chats as someone without the slightest bit of political clout. Her father had to be able to understand the stakes, and soon.

This was why she hadn’t had time for the Nexus, but now she was starting to reconsider. There was one person who could help here, only one she trusted to put everything in place. And she couldn’t find him anywhere.

Maybe that place would help, if she could just find a way to -

She blinked. She was standing in the river, had been for an hour now, thinking. Trying to come up with a plan. Listening for the music that meant the way to the Nexus was open. Composing her thoughts.

She was done thinking.

She looked up to Hyrule Castle. She didn’t have to listen very hard to hear screams coming from there, and she thought she could make out smoke rising above it. She didn’t need any more evidence, though.

Blood ran down the river and pooled around her legs. It was time to act.
