The escorting from his unusual cell back through the crowd of people was bizarre enough.

It made returning to the door Carlisle had entered to arrive here, opening it, seeing the utter quiet and dank of familiar tunnels, jarring.

He walks through the door expecting another cell.

They have to watch. They have to wait. That isn't new, but it is. This time it is watching and waiting for Carlisle to be released from a cell, for him to be walked across a room full of people, liable to actual destruction and violence.

For him to walk through the Door.

To catch the Door, silent in pale fingers, before it closes.

"He didn't--" Alice murmurs, finishing the sentence in her mind. See us. She stands beside her brother, arms folded over her chest in a protective stance.

Everything is all wrong. It all hurts, a blinding sort of headache just behind her eye. Her jaw muscles clench in annoyance.

If Jasper thought seeing Carlisle in the cell was bad, this is worse. The Volturi terrify him and Alice was in pain. "Maybe we should think about this some more."

leaving leaving leaving east gate, maybe. has to be near sunlight, everyone would be leaving the gate to report last chance of it all.

Carlisle's mental voice is becoming fainter as he accelerates through the passageways.
