Carlisle has appeared at the house after work.

With a small baseball glove, two bats and an entire bucket of baseballs.

Standing in the front entranceway, Carlisle waits for Esme and Edward to figure out that he is home.

Edward looked up from writing music, speaking to the whole house and the spot of bouncing enthusiasm in the front walk.

"Could you be any more obvious?"

"It's a requirement to be stealthy now?"

"What are the two of you--" Esme has started the sentence, rounding the corner to meet Carlisle at the hall from the sound of the door. Her eyebrows raised curiously confused and amused in one.

There was a rumpled chuckle from the other side of the house.

"I thought we could have an outing."

With baseball bats.

Helpfully: "I found a field."

Better than baseball hats, right?

(Shh. Esme you have a few years until that.)

When she said, "I don't know how to play," there was the demur air of seeing Carlisle so vastly pleased, without sounding reluctance in her deficient toward it.

"Statements like that only encourage him," Edward said, setting aside his music and standing up. He walked through the house, and stopped near the walkway's opposite opening.

"I bought you a glove. I tried to wear it in for you but your hand is far too small for me why are women's hands always so small come here a second."

Carlisle puts the bucket down and holds a bat under each arm to put the glove over Esme's hand.

"We'll teach you. It'll be fun."

Esme's hand was suddenly much bigger, and covered in brown leather. Not as soft as possible or annoying, either. A sudden aberration, swallowing part of her wrist and she gave a tremulous smile.

"And I've not heard either of you talk about this before, because?"

"He gets distracted," Edward said. "And then it's the only thing I get to hear about for days on end."

"Better than the tendons of the human calf, I'm assuming," Carlisle retorts.

He's nearly vibrating at his wife.

"Care to join us?"

"I think you might cry if I didn't, at this rate."

There was a quiet, curved teasing smile, as she was testing bending the glove with her hand inside of it. Trying to be gentle enough to not break it while figuring out how she could move.

"He would." Edward pipped up, even as he was grinning broadly and opened his hands as though miming to catch a bat, or both, so that there are more hands free for all.

"She is willing to play along."

"I would not."

Both get tossed to Edward so Carlisle can go to his room and rescue his own glove. Want yours Edward I'm sure it's around here somewhere ---

"He lies." Edward caught the bats and shot back, even though he was grinning at Esme with her wiggling fingers in the glove. She got a conspiratorial wink. "I would know."

Beat. To Carlisle.

"Unless you want me stealing yours."

Esme laughed, watching them and wondering at the way they both lit up under the sudden new discovery.

"Is it going to be like this the whole time?"
