Family storytime.

Carlisle would have thought that with Alice's particular talent that she would be far less interested than she appears to be in stories of the family's past.

"I see the future," Alice corrects him, "Not what's already happened. I want to know everything."

The stories start out easy before getting embarrassing; Esme has a solid fifteen minutes of explanation of the years Carlisle and she spent dancing around each other. (Edward spends most of the story laughing at Carlisle's expense.)

Jasper, laughing along with the stories but mostly quiet with questions as the family is sprawled in the living room, finally asks one. "How exactly did you end up leaving the Volturi?"

The room quiets. Jasper looks two seconds away from apologizing for having asked the question when Carlisle smiles at him. "No, it's...it's fine.

"I was...incarcerated for several weeks and not allowed to hunt. I don't know if you have ever starved, Jasper," Carlisle continues, "but I have a strong theory that we start to hallucinate if we haven't eaten for that long. I saw...God only knows what, but eventually at the end I escaped from the cell and started to fight the guards. They won, and I was taken to see Marcus, Caius and Aro.

"They issued the expulsion order and I was dismissed, but the guards that remained were very...upset with me, for having attacked them. The one friend I had made during my time there, Gerard, fought them to help me leave."

Carlisle shrugs. "And...that's kind of it. I found the cache Aro left for me approximately a year later, and moved to America."

Edward looks about ready to punch something. This was a long time ago, Edward. It led me to here. Carlisle is smiling.

"Well I want to hear about the first nurse that ever decided you were sexy," Rosalie snorts derisively. "Did she lose her glasses beforehand?"

Esme launches a pillow at Rosalie which Emmett deflects; Carlisle laughs at the group of them with an easy smile.
