LIT424/HIS319 INTRO TO MEDIEVAL TOPICS (ELECTIVE)
This course is a brief introductory seminar for highly-motivated seniors interested in English literature and the Western cultural tradition. The first half of the course will focus on the familiar Arthurian mythos, using primary sources ranging from medieval texts to modern interpretations. Critical reading and viewing skills are highly necessary!
The second helf of the course will be MUCH MORE CHALLENGING and focuses on the less familiar European traditions of Charlemagne and his knights. This section of the course will focus more strongly on HISTORICAL REALITIES in comparison with the mythopoetic heroic traditions found in the chanson de geste. The main primary text will be the famous SONG OF ROLAND.

PROF: JACQUELINE BAUER
This course can be counted as a JUNIOR HISTORY credit or a SENIOR LITERATURE credit, but not both.
"Have you had a class with this Bauer before?"
"No, I never heard of--him? her?"
"Her, I guess."
"Maybe she's new. Didn't someone in the lit department get pregnant?"
"Oh yeah, Miss Connor."
"I heard it was Principal Cameron who knocked her up."
"What!"
"No shit! Pepper Lawrence saw them in her car and she was totally crying, right before she started gaining weight."
"Dude, Emmy, he'd lose his job."
"I heard he hushed it up and gave her a bunch of money to go away."
"Yeah, the principal hushed it up. What, did he call in a favor with the Godfather?"
"Don't joke about that."
"Emmy--"
"I'm not saying anything, I'm just saying my dad's Italian, and... don't joke about that."
"...okay."
"But I hear Evan Maggio all of a sudden isn't flunking French anymore and he's going to graduate."
"You hear a lot of weird shit, Emmy."
"That's because everybody trusts me."
"But you tell everybody what you hear."
"Yeah, but I don't say from who."
"What about Pepper?"
"Pepper has a stupid name."
"...yeah, but--"
"Are you going to the GSA protest?"
"I 'unno."
"Dude! It'll be awesome! When are you going to go to Washington DC otherwise?"
"Yeah, but I have to get permission and a check from my parents."
"Because your mom is so going to say no to you going to a protest in Washington. She'll probably cry."
"She'll probably try to come."
"Even your mom isn't that bad."
"I won't bet on it..."
"Okay so I have to go but is that it? You have your schedule?"
"Yeah, I guess I'm taking this medieval thing, and I'm switching to a study hall last period now that the computer requirement is done. And I'm picking up a cooking class instead of study hall with freaky creepy Mr. Hairald. Everything else has to continue."
"Sweet. Okay, gotta go babe, but see you at lunch tomorrow."
"See you, Em."
"This semester is going to be great I think. By the way if you don't go on a date with a girl by your birthday I'm getting you one off Craiglist."
"Wait, WHAT--"
"Byebye, talk later!"
"EMMY! EMMY! YOU CAN'T JUST--"
"...the fuck just happened here!?"
