Character Info
Character Name: Princess Ozma of Oz
Character’s Age: She has the look of a 14 year old, though she's stated in canon that she's "not so young". The magic of Oz has kept her young, and it is assumed it will continue to do so forever. She's a little older than 100 if you count by the years her story has been around.
Fandom: Fables
Timeline: Issue 102
Appearance:
Ozma is a very pretty, petite little girl, who fits the image of a princess almost perfectly. She's short and thin, and hasn't yet reached puberty. She has pale skin, shimmering blue eyes, and pale blond hair with a hint of curl, that always seems to fall right. She wears her hair down, where it falls to a little past her shoulders, and almost always has a large, bright red poppy in it. Sometimes the poppy is gone, in place of ribbons, and she's seen sporting various different hair styles (such as pigtails, or not wearing anything in her hair) from time to time, but for the most part, she wears a poppy.
Ozma almost always wears at least a small smile on her face. She has a look that seems to give off both friendliness and wisdom at once, dignity and a hint of magic. She still considers herself a Princess, so she makes sure to keep her appearance tidy and formal at all times. Ozma never looks dirty. She usually wears very childlike dresses that fall past her knees and dance upon the border between elegance and simplistic design, colored in all sorts of pastel colors, or a deep purple fur-lined jacket. Her clothing is often embellished with the symbol of Oz.
History:
Here and
here I'll be considering the first 14 books that Frank Baum wrote as canon.
Canon description is
here Personality: Ozma was a kind, patient and fair ruler of Oz. She was very beloved to her people, and a dear friend to Dorothy, Betsy and Trot. She has a whimsical way about her, that transfers into her actions and speech. She's quick to smile, gives good advice, and very smart. She surrounds herself with books, magic and close friends. She's an excellent leader, as proven during her rule of Oz, and her position as leader of the witches in Fabletown after Totenkinder leaves. There is no doubting in her leadership experience, but because of it, she has a very hard time being a follower. She's much to proud to obey commands from others, and refuses to beg or say please to anyone. She sees herself in a very high light, and refuses to step down to other people's levels. She has the ability to constantly point out the faults of others around her, and state them in a way that people can't really do much except nod. Because she's right, Ozma of Oz is always right. She's very proud, and a bad enemy to make.
Very few things make Ozma sad, and even fewer can make her angry. Towards strangers, she's distant but polite, and with her friends and citizens, she's powerful but still generous. She loves her friends very much, and dislikes seeing anyone get hurt, even her enemies. She prefers to persuade others peacefully, or through the magic of the Magic Belt rather than fighting, and if there is a fight, she's not typically involved in any combat. She's brave, and not afraid to stand up for herself and her opinions. Alignment-wise, she's a lawful good type of character, though she very rarely steps into neutral good territory. She has a strong sense of empathy for others, and for her citizens or the greater good, she will even stand up to kings more powerful than she is. She is a force to be reckoned with, beautiful and strong. For other people, she will do anything- even go undercover to topple an empire if it's for the best of the people. Of course, if that empire were to topple, she would put herself at the head of it. She does know best.
As Princess of Oz, and later as leader of the witches in Fabletown, Ozma was used to getting others to do work for her, especially when it comes to fighting. This may have changed slightly- as seen when she joins Fabletown's own group of superheroes to fight to keep The Farm safe. Both duty and promises are sacred to her, and she refuses to break a promise for anything. She has a very dry sense of humor, and mostly just giggles softly to herself when she finds something amusing. She is very polite and formal at all times, and has a very strict moral code that she sticks to. She expects respect, and gives others respect in exchange, but will quickly become cross when faced with disrespect. She despises silly nicknames or pet names, and will warn whoever calls her one not to make the mistake of doing it again. No one knows what exactly it is she'll do, but most of them are so frightened by the sudden change of tone and expression that they'll back down. And then Ozma will put on her normal soft smile and musical voice, and go back to whatever it was she might have been doing before.
With her fleeing to Fabletown, she puts a lot more stock into safety and her own life. She's realized that though Oz was a very perfect place, Earth will not treat her the same way. And while she still expects to be treated with dignity, she knows that being Princess of Oz means very little to the average human civilian, and sometimes even less to the fables around her. She's not willing to swallow her pride, but she is willing to be flexible, to make alliances with others, and to have patience with them. After all - she's much wiser than all of them. How could they ever know what they're doing wrong?
It's important to think of Ozma's kindness and her patience closely though. Most people don't irritate her, and to those and her friends, she is gentle and good. She tries to do everything for the best of others. She's soft, cares deeply for animals and their feelings, and spending time with her friends gives her great joy. Dorothy and her other female friends are greeted with kisses to the cheek every morning, and giant hugs. She tries to always give good, unbiased advice when asked on something, and sometimes speaks in riddles or prophecies to protect others from the truth. The truth is a very dangerous thing.
Powers/Abilities: Ozma is a witch, and while it's never specified what exactly she can do, she is shown as being powerful enough to lead a group of witches and wizards from all of the other fairy tales, fables and old storybooks in existence. She's a true daughter of Oz, the princess, and has magic running through her veins. The magic keeps her young, and provides her with the ability to wield other magical items, such as the Magic Belt- which will be the only magical item on her when she arrives in Bell Pointe. In Oz or in Fabletown, she would be able to age if she chose to, but for whatever reason, she has decided to remain at her current age.
The Magic Belt- always written with a capital M and a capital B to distinguish it from other magic belts is one of the most powerful items in all of Oz. Once the Nome King's Belt, it was stolen from him by a little girl named Dorothy Gale, who in turn gave it to Ozma. The belt essentially grants one wish to it's owner a day. It's very useful, unless you've already used it that day, then it's pretty much worthless. It rants wishes for anything- from a box of caramel candies to miracles.
The last ability that the magic gives Ozma is the ability to dream of prophecies, things that may or may not come to be. The draw to the prophecies is that Ozma never knows what they actually mean. They're confusing and jumbled, never clear, and very rarely about anyone she's close to. The prophecies she dreams of are never about herself.
Aside from her magical ability, her role as a Fable's character grants her some forms of power and invulnerability. Basically, the more known the fictional character of Ozma is, the harder it becomes for her to die, and the stronger she becomes.
Limitations: The Magic Belt will be used extremely sparingly, Ozma knows how to use discretion when it comes to magic. It will not be able to perform any miracles which would remove her from Bell Pointe, bring anyone else to Bell Pointe, or interfere with any major plot points, unless granted case-by-case permission by the mods. Instead, it will offer other things- flowers, a new dress, etc. Occasionally the belt will offer her other types of miracles, such as healing someone who is injured, but this will only be able to happen once every IC week, and only if she hasn't used the belt that day. Her aging will still be at a standstill, she won't be able to choose if she wants to age or not. She will hardly dream of prophecies at all, maybe once every in game month, if circumstances call for it.
Writing Samples
Third Person Sample: The silence in the room was unbearable, broken only by the consistent noise of Ozma drumming her fingers against the table. Her were eyes closed, and her head was tilted to the side, lazily resting on the hand that wasn't drumming.
"Mmm. Yes, I see, that's very terrible indeed."
She replied, giving a slight nod, and straightening in her seat, regaining poise, and control of the conversation. It was slightly amusing how quickly she could gain their attention, even in this form, as her blue eyes seemed to stare into the very soul of her companion. Then she gave a slight nod, picked up her tea cup daintily, and took another long sip, taking her time to respond. Patience was a virtue, and she expected of her guests. Of course, the guest obeyed, and Ozma took a long sip of her tea, before setting it down gently.
"I'm aware of why you came to me, and I will assist you- but first, would you care for some treats?"
She waved her hands, and voila, there was a tray of delicious looking snacks appeared before her guest. Ozma waited for the guest to take one, before she picked up her own, and ate it as daintily as she could. She dabbed gently at her face with a handkerchief, took another sip of tea, and then folded her hands on her lap. She did hate to waste time, but all good things came with time and patience. She couldn't exactly just offer her assistance right away, could she?
"I will assist you. In return, you will be in debt to me, understood? I will not ask of anything unreasonable. I am just and fair, you do not need to worry about that. Yes, I am a witch, to some extent, but I am a good one. I posses magic, yes, very powerful magic, but it may not be enough. I might not be able to fix it. I will try with all my might- but I am not positive I am strong enough to face this alone."
Her eyes fluttered shut again at this point, and she went and propped her chin on both her hands, leaning foreword and resting her elbows on her knees a moment. She was being honest, of course, but it pained her that she didn't know if she could do this for them. Maybe if Dorothy were here, or Maddy-- No. She didn't need them. She was Ozma of Oz. If anyone could do it, it would be her. It was all up to her, she had to do it.
"I'll free you from this place." She said, standing up and smoothing her dress down with her hands. She would do it. She would free them, and everyone here, and then she would go home, go to the farm, and defeat the horrible creature there. She was Ozma of Oz. If anyone was destined to do something like this, it had to be her.
First Person Sample: [A soft, musical voice comes through the telephone.]
Hello, this is Ozma. My apologies if I'm inconveniencing you at all. I was wondering if anyone might have fresh flowers, or a garden perhaps where some could be grown? Poppies are preferable, but I'm not sure if they are available, so anything will have to do. It might seem to be a slight foolish, perhaps, but I never feel right without them in my hair. Old habits die hard, I suppose.
If you do, you're welcome to stay for tea. I do enjoy guests, even if they seldom visit.
