Caterpillar Cake Adventures!

With March Break activities coming up, Kaitlyn (my co-worker) and I are trying to come up with fun activities to do with kids during our "Making History Workshops." The most popular one is always cake decorating - but we need to come up with a new design. So this weekend I decided to test one of the designs we found in our research for fun, easy, spring-themed cakes that kids can make. My cake decorating skills are pretty on par with the kids - as you can see below! :D

Though, we didn't have any cake mix or eggs, so I did a bit of creative thinking and used an old-school recipe:
In a bowl just quickly mixed the following ingredients:

  • 2 and 1/2 cups All Purpose Flour
  • 2 teaspoons Baking Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt
  • 2 tablespoons Sugar
  • 1/2 cup of coco

Then I created a nice "dip" in the center and poured in the wet ingredients:
  • 1 can Sweetened Condensed Milk (I used a 300ml can)
  • 1 cup Water
  • 2 tablespoons Vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons Vanilla Extract
  • 1/2 cup Melted Butter
Whisked all of it together, and poured it into a greased & floured bundt cake mold and baked at 350 for 40 minutes. Once cooked through I took it out, cut the cake in half and put the two semi-circles together so it created the "wave" shape that makes up the caterpillar body. Put a bit of icing to meld them together and then started decorating! I think it turned out okay, and I'm sure the kids will love being able to take the cake home with them. It worked out a lot better then Kaitlyn's cake pop fiasco last weekend.

The cake was delicious, VERY filling, but probably could have used more chocolate ... still, considering how many ingredients I didn't have I think it turned out okay.

recipe, work
