Note: Please see the end of the post for an important mod note regarding newly eligible shows.
I don't know how many of you follow icon award communities but I've always heavily supported the idea. Unfortunately, many of these communities are dying out from a lack of participants and nominations, despite the fact that their main reason for existing is to celebrate good icon making. As such, the next challenge at
offthebox is a not-at-all-disguised attempt to help up participation in at least one of those communities while celebrating the wonderful icon makers that participate here.
I present to you: 28 - The Award Your Friends (And Allies) Challenge
No nifty quote this week in order to save room for explanation. Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to purposefully make icons (using caps of no longer airing television shows) that fit the categories over at
100pixel_awards. The categories include:
Thematic Awards
Duet [best icon of a couple or threesome]
The Chicken Dance [best humorous icon]
Happy Go Lucky [best display of happy emotions in an icon]
Sidekick [best display of a minor character in an icon]
Solitary [best display of a main character in an icon]
Team Chemistry [best display of friendship or teamwork in an icon]
Valley of Darkness [best display of unhappy emotions in an icon]
Technical Awards
Broken Hallelujah [best cropping]
Clouds [best use of texture and/or brushwork in an icon]
Mirrors and Fevers [best use of repeated images in an icon]
Move It [best animated icon]
Secrets [best use of text in an icon]
Sound of Silence [best icon without text]
Sunglasses At Night [best black&white icon]
Sunrise, Sunset [best coloring in an icon]
Two Sides to Every Soul [best use of blending and/or manipulation in an icon]
Undiscovered [best use of original themes or effects in an icon]
Unlike usual weeks, you may submit up to thirty-four icons so long as no more than two come from the same category. You cannot submit three icons from any given category. Please label what categories you're submitting them towards and, if we get enough submissions, we'll do voting either by category or separate the thematic submissions from the technical ones.
Please participate. I know that we, as mods, have not always been the most prompt or on-the-ball but as the only community which is designed towards cancelled tv shows in particular it would be a pity if we died out from a lack of participation just as much as if we died out from poor organization on part of the mods.
Check out
this post if you're looking for ideas and
this post for a short list of some useful resources, including screencap galleries. Again, remember that any show you use cannot be producing new episodes.

How to submit entries. Icons are due February 28th, 2008 (U.S. Los Angeles time). That gives everyone nearly two weeks to submit icons for this challenge and I hope that we will get quite a few submissions! And look for our next challenge, coming Feb. 29th, where we ask you all to make a new banner for the
offthebox layout!
- If there is interest in it, I can set up a general access Photobucket album for everyone to upload the icons to in order to make it easier to nominate to
100pixel_awards.
- Due to the Writer's Strike, a number of shows have been officially cancelled earlier than usual this season. These shows are now eligible for submission here and include The 4400 (USA), Big Shots (ABC), Bionic Woman (NBC), Dead Zone (USA), Journeyman (NBC), and Life Is Wild (CW).
If you know of any other shows which have officially gone dark/are definitely not expecting any additional episodes, please comment here and I will add them to the list.
