Character Number: Five.

Character: C.C.
Fandom: Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion.

Personality: The first time C.C. is presented to the viewers as a very mysterious and enigmatic person who is quickly shot down. But the moment she returns to the series this character trait is made subordinate to her other character traits. C.C. is portrayed as a very passive person. She's (especially in the beginning) usually shown just lying or sitting somewhere and occasionally talking while others are taking action. Not many things seem to be able to impress or impact her - even when Mao proclaims that he will 'make her compact' so he can take her along in a suitcase she doesn't seem as panicked as a normal person would be - and she's not shown to care about many things either. Even though she starts doing more as the series progresses, C.C. still sometimes remains a bit of an observer who only takes action when it's absolutely necessary, for instance when she saves Lelouch by showing up in a Zero costume in one of the earlier episodes. She is someone who supports when it's needed but mostly from the shadows; she isn't a person to take the spotlight.

C.C. holds a very pessimistic view of the world. She seems very cold and blunt because she always says things exactly the way they are - she doesn't sugar coat anything, tying in with the pessimism. Whenever Lelouch starts doubting his own actions it's C.C. that gives him a verbal kick in the shins and urges him to continue on. In episode 13 of the first season Lelouch starts worrying after Shirley's father was killed during one of the battles, but C.C. immediately and bluntly tells him: "But the one who is weak is you. Did you think this was a game? Up till now, you have killed a lot of people. Using your hands, or should I say your words? Then why you are confused right now? Don't tell me you've been swayed by your emotions? Kissing in an embrace. No matter how great you make yourself sound, you're still just a naive boy who's all talk and who only dreams of victory in his head." Even though it's all part of her own goals as well ("You no longer have the right to get agitated or to choose to do nothing. You shouldn't do that if you wish to live on, right? Don't disappoint me."), she keeps reminding Lelouch of what he has to do more than anyone else and urges him on. She's closed and secretive, never sharing much information with other people. In the beginning she even keeps a lot of things from Lelouch that are actually important (like the limits of his Geass among other things). When she asks him a question instead and he asks her why she asks him questions while refusing to answer any of his, she just curtly replies, "If you don't want to answer me, then you don't have to. Just like me." She doesn't care much at all.

It's not all just blunt and/or cynical talking though, C.C. is a person who excels at snarking as well. She doesn't even mind joking around about things like how she and Lelouch are 'promised to each other' to Nunnally, who obviously takes it seriously, or about Kallen being Zero in front of important persons. Her jokes are often at other people's expense, considering C.C. is good at reading people and knowing exactly which buttons to push to get the best reaction out of them. This is especially often shown in her conversations with Kallen, for example when C.C. switches places with Zero/Lelouch without anyone else knowing:

Kallen: "I don't like this, going so far as to hide this from us."
C.C.: "'Us'? You mean 'me', don't you?"

It also happens often with Tamaki, most likely because he just really is a person who is easy to make fun of. Lelouch himself isn't excused from her snarking either, even at a serious moment she makes fun of him after he grants her request for him to say her name by saying that he said it in a terrible way, whereas any normal people would have thanked them in return.

When C.C. stops sitting back while watching and snarking and actually takes action for once she is very independant. She's stubborn to a fault and doesn't particularly care whether other people approve of her actions or not - she even causes Lelouch trouble by going out multiple times during school festivals to fetch a piece of the giant pizza due to her pizza obsession. Even when he tells her to go back she insists on going to get a piece. C.C. is very goal-oriented and doesn't mind whatever means she has to use to reach the goal. In one of the very early episodes she doesn't mind shooting Lelouch in the leg if it means that he can't go out and get himself into danger. She seems very selfish due to her fixation on her own goals (especially her goal of dying) and her stubbornness. She doesn't mind using Lelouch's credit card without his permission to order pizzas and that is still one of the milder examples.

With all the above combined one could say C.C. is quite the bitchy sort of character, but there is more to her. In fact, her mysterious and enigmatic side from the beginning remain present throughout the series; sometimes she unexpectedly says something deep and since a lot of information about her isn't told until later in the second season there's still a feeling of mystery surrounding her.

But why is she this way? During flashbacks she's shown to be more innocent. Perhaps still selfish and bratty, but less like the cold and pessimistic person she is now. It's all an effect of having lived as long as she has - after all, C.C. is an immortal witch. Unable to die she has been watching the world for a long time and has been tortured in all sorts of ways along the way, including burning at the stake, being put in an iron maiden and more. She has watched everyone she ever care for die. At a certain point she just got sick of an eternal life like that ("You don't call endless aggregation of not dying, 'life'. That is merely an experience.") and gained a wish - to finally be able to die. She's tired of living on endlessly, doesn't even feel like a human anymore and tries to make contract with people to grant them Geass in return for them granting her wish. But nobody has been able to do so. Aside from that she tends to keep away from people, as showed in a conversation with Lelouch she has halfway through the first season:

C.C.: "Don't put in too much effort into it if it's something you don't really want to lose."
Lelouch: "Was that... from experience?"
C.C.: "No, it's a way of life."

C.C. is able to care for people though, but she only lets certain people in. Even though Mao had become a complete nutcase when he met C.C. and Lelouch in the first season, C.C. still cared about him and felt guilty for what had happened to him that made him the way he was now. Even when she shoots Mao in the end she has a completely sad look on her face and admits that she once loved him. C.C. feels guilty over the pain that the power of Geass causes everyone - when they destroy the Geass organisation in the second season C.C. says, "Forgive me. This is my sin for letting you all run rampant." She understands that the power of Geass eventually brings peope misfortune (she even tells that to Lelouch before he agrees to the contract), even though still grants it to people hoping that they can fulfill her wish.

Of course her caring side is also shown in certain scenes she has with Lelouch. At the times when he needs it the most she is there for him. When he feels horrible after the whole situation with Euphemia, she is the one that's there for him, that holds him. And by the time she has the opportunity to pass on her immortality to either Lelouch or Charles she doesn't pick Lelouch. He even asks then if she pities him, and the answer is most likely yes - even though she made a contract with him she probably didn't want to force the hell of eternal life on him. She cares about him in a way that she doesn't for anyone else.

There is a change to C.C. throughout the series though. Through all her experiences and interactions with Lelouch she starts to feel more human again. In the first season she states that she had forgotten how to care (about people), and near the end of the second season she's surprised to find herself caring about whether she wins or loses again. She's starting to see the value of her eternal life now, mostly thanks to Lelouch, why didn't hate her or the power she gave him even when everyone else had in the past. In fact, C.C. looks considerably more happy at the end of the series when she's laying on top of the hay cart.

"Geass brings one solitude. Heh. Not quite accurate. Right, Lelouch?"

History: nifty wiki page. C.C. will come from the hay cart post-series.

Abilities: C.C. is a 'witch'. She is immortal - in a way that she doesn't age anymore (she is actually already really old) and can't be killed in a way other than giving away her immortality, her 'Code', to a Geass user who was able to reach the highest level. In the series she's at the very least shown to be shot multiple times and crushed by water pressure at the end of the first season, but she always heals quickly afterwards. Through quick flashbacks it's implied that she suffered from burning at the stake, being placed inside iron maidens and all other sorts of torture and yet survived.

The other thing that's most important next to her immortality is the fact that she is able to grant other people the power of Geass by entering a contract with them. The exact power of Geass is different for each person. (Lelouch has the power to make anyone obey his commands, Mao has the power to read other people's thoughts, C.C. herself at one point had the power to make anyone fall in love with her.) It should be noted that C.C. is immune to any sort of Geass because of this.

There is another power that's a bit more vague. Throughout the series it's shown that C.C. is capable of giving other people mental images, almost like hallucinations or flashbacks. It's usually done through physical contact, although it's seen with contact between Knightmare Frames as well. These images can be any sort of images - random omnious images, that person's own memories (Suzaku sees how he killed his father, Anya sees an image of Lelouch when he was younger, presumably part of Marianne's memories) or even C.C.'s memories. It's usually enough to leave the other person in shock for a while. Sometimes this power also acts up involuntary.

Aside from these special powers C.C. is also shown to be able to fight barehanded if she has to - in one episode she pins a man to the wall with just her foot. She's also capable of piloting a Knightmare Frame, although she isn't as capable as for instance Kallen or Suzaku. She also controls the Gawain together with Lelouch, with her piloting and Lelouch handling the attacking.

( Cheese-kun will also arrive with her. )

Sample writing: C.C. was leaning idly against the wall with her back - or perhaps sprawled out on the floor was a better word to use for it. The yellow big plush blob, Cheese-kun, was shoved between the top of her back and the wall, as if it was the only thing keeping her from falling over and lying completely on the floor. Her gaze slowly panned across the croft's lacking furnishing (not that she particularly minded) until it came to rest on the back of the head of a young man, bent over the table he was sitting at.

Lelouch.

Lelouch, who had died back home during Zero Requiem, sitting there at the table like it was perfectly normal for him to be there. Well, it probably was - to him. It was strange, although not necessarily bad, to C.C. to see him again like this. But then again, wasn't experiencing something like this refreshing in an eternal life where she just saw and lived the same things over and over again?

And besides, Lelouch was special. The one person who hadn't hated her for the gift (or curse) of Geass, but who had instead used it to take all the hatred upon him and then let himself be killed for it, of his own will.. If there would be one person she would feel glad for seeing again, it would be Lelouch. After all, he was the one who had been able to change her outlook on life if not just a bit, something nobody else had accomplished in centuries full of meeting people, losing people, making contracts. Yes, Lelouch himself had been the refreshing and surprising thing in that long monotonous time of living.

After the silence in the room lingered for another moment she noticed the boy turning around, a look somewhere in the middle of a frown and curiosity on his face as if he had felt her gaze burning into his back all this time and couldn't stand it anymore. "What's wrong?"

There was first a moment where she didn't answer. Those little smiles and those near-pouts she thought she wouldn't see again and maybe a slight moment before when she caught herself regretting that she wouldn't see them again. Just a slight moment.

We're accomplices, aren't we?

"Nothing." She finally broke the silence, the ends of her lips curling up to form a small smile. "Should there be?"
