Live Blogging B5

Dec 25, 2012 20:07

Finally!  After  many broken promises (mine), and failed attempts to find Babylon 5 for free online, I finally have my hands on the series via the Phoenix Public Library.  Shout out to libraries.

So, hey to Nymeria *waves* I proceed with live blogging Babylon 5, episode 1, "Midnight on the Firing Line."  Oh, by the way, I DID find it free online!  yay me.  http://www.thewb.com/shows/babylon-5

Ok.  So , geared it up.  Standard sci fi voiceover: Space the final frontier, or My name is John Crichton or we can rebuild him...etc etc.  I don't mind.  some of the shots remind of Galaxyquest, but I guess that's par for the course.

Captain's a little stiff.  Like the guy with the goofy hair whose name I don't remember at the moment.  Best line in the first five minutes: "I'm in the middle of 15 things, all of them annoying..."  (Ivanova's response to the empath/shrink assigned to her).  I think her true thought is  :Try to head shrink me, you mofo..."

Moving on....Ok, making allowances for TV budgets and such, the effects are a little weak.  Did she say "Nebari"?  No, I think it was neMbari....not a Sinclair fan so far.  Ivanova looks skeptical...she has the best lines so far--no chins/too many chins...

This ambassador dude--love him!  Very Rygel.  Is that a wormhole!?  Uh-oh....G'Kar aka pretty Scarran (yes, Farscape) is on the ambassador's doo doo list. G'kar kind of reminds me of Scorpius, face wise.  G'kar has some good lines too.  I like this conflict, and G'Kar is pretty awesome.    Do not mess with this guy--kind of cool and menacing all at once.

Narns...ok that's their name.  so this is personal for the ambassador. I like the difference between the two in conflict--one that seems cool, the other a hothead.  I like the ambassador's breakdown of politics--names on paper.

Ivanova!  Maybe I have a weakness for cool chicks with ponytails and stony demeanors...Garibaldi's ok too.   And there's the empath, stalking Ivanova. Sinclair sounds like John Robinson from the Jupiter 2 (Lost in Space).  What the what?  The alien steamroom...the funky shower curtain.  What is that!?   Ok...that's kind of Skeletor...He wasn't very clear either.

Ivanova!  Do that--snap his hands off at the wrist!  Do not sit at her console. The woman doesn't like that.

Londo--that's his name.  "You can go to hell too--I wouldn't want you to be left out"  Great.  lots of conflict already.   Londo makes a nice statement about politics here.  Well, not so much nice as astute.

Why is that blond chick so sexy?  I mean, the sashy, the heels...subtext!  "It's not you, it's me.  I don't like you."  LOL--Lt Commander takes awhile to warm up to people.  So Garibaldi says that he'd like to show her his favorite thing in the universe...ok, his second favorite thing.  Heh...you go, Garibaldi.

I like G'Kar--great voice.  Sinclair has a nice voice too but he's kind of a stiff.  At least G'Kar is honest--we'd like to grind their bones into children's toys...at any rate, kind of prescient what with attacking civilian stuff.

Minbari?  Mimbari?  I only hear Nebari.  Farscape ears.

Ivanova!  Yes, I'm going to do that every time.  Sinclair just got slapped with the prime directive but he's going to do what he thinks is right.  Those ships look like x wing fighters but also kind of like the old Battlestar ships.

Ivanova!  Wow...kind of sounds like Palestine and Israel on that whole it's my land, no, it's my land.   Those pyramidy things remind me of Stargate (B5 was first, of course).    I really like G'Kar.  He reminds me of Scorpius so I don't trust him.

skip the space battles...space sure is blue, though.

Londo, what are you up to...I wish those weapons looked more menacing but then again, blood calls out for blood.  Too bad he ran into a mind reader...who needs to walk a lot faster!  That Garibaldi guy is ok: "The paperwork is a pain in the butt..."

Ivanova!  She has a great voice, and now she's dressed like a girl!  Subtext!  hahahahahaha...Telepath!   Heavy duty Ivanova backstory...

Love Garibaldi's second favorite thing!  And his companion's response.

Ah, politics!  Chinless wins!

Overall 2.5-3 out of 5; there's enough interesting characters to keep me watching.  Weak points: effects, for sure, and Sinclair's Saturday morning cartoon commander voice.  Strong points: still relevant themes regarding warfare and politics, as well as interesting characters and a nice smattering of humor.  And also: Ivanova!

Just had to type that one more time
