Character Name: Officer Carla Renaldi . LAPD: Undead Task Force.
Series: MTV's "Death Valley"
Age: Carla is 23 years old, born May 13th 1988. She is a Gemini/Dragon.
From When?: Post the end of "Peace in the Valley"-just after the attack in the bar.
Inmate/Warden: Warden. Carla is a bureacrat in the making with a bit of a wild streak. She also believes in people and is willing to help and protect others however.
As a warden, Renaldi will be tough but fair. She'll be utterly loyal to her inmate. While she might start out being a bit blunt, depending on some of the experiences that she and her inmate share she might be willing to open up to them about her life and experiences. She considers herself here as a representative of the LAPD but she's doing this for personal reasons. I'll be looking to build a partner relationship with her, someone who she can be loyal to and who will be loyal to her in return because she needs to make other friends besides John-John.
Her ideal inmate could be either human, meta human or non human. She voices some of her father's prejudices occasionally, but she buys into the notion that the law applies to everybody equally. If you have the misfortune to be attacked and bitten by anything and survive the transformation (or someone compassionate doesn't put a bullet in your head) then you will still be held responsible under the rule of law. She'll be best with someone who she can teach/someone who might respond to unconventional therapy methods. When Carla was in high school, she got a copy of "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Matinence" from her father. A year later, when she graduated she got her very own motorcycle. While she rarely rides it-your character will get a crash course in finding a hobby and drawing peace from it.
She'll also be big on feminism, either impressing it upon a reckless male or encouraging a female to stand up and take charge-however she won't do it with the most delicate touch in either case. Her ultimate goal will be to show people that authority-while it might not always be okay-is human just like the rest of mankind. Then work on some more delicate issues. As far as punishments go, she won't be particularly creative. It'll be straight to zero for all concerned. However, whenever she was bad as a kid, she would do chores, so she might put out a call for people who need general help in various areas-of the backbreaking variety.
Item: Her necklace. It was a gift from her grandmother. She will also have (as a testament to her relationship with her coworkers) John-John's bat, that she'll probably carry around for the first few days, but it has no properties particularly.
Abilities/Powers: Carla has all of the basic skillset of an American Police Officer. She has the advantage of being young and while she is not as fast as her counterpart on the series Kristen, she makes up for it in strength. While thin, she is wry and strong and works out regularly in a regime of kickboxing and tae kwon do.
Chances are, she might try and engage her inmate in this. She will try to engage her inmate in these activities. Having a history of wild activity, she has learned numerous positive ways of dealing with anger and stress and her goal will be to help people translate that to other activities.
Personality:
When we are first introduced to Carla Renaldi she's talking to her partner about how much he loves living in the valley. She says that she can see him living it up in other parts of Los Angeles and hosting parties with famous people easily. She's warm and friendly towards him, completely ignoring the camera and the fact that their entire conversation is being filmed for a studio audience. She cracks jokes with John John, laughs, and genuinely enjoys working with him on a personal level.
As the episode progresses, she is shown to be ruthless, utterly adherent to procedure, and dangerous. Carla was reared to take care of other people's needs before her own, but her conversation with John-John and all subsequent conversations with other members of her squad and other cops show that she also knows how to take care of herself. Carla was taught that you did not enter into a job like being a cop without a warm love for others and compassion for humanity, but she learned through experience that she also has to know when to step back and take care of herself.
This is what keeps her apart from Hoffman. Where Hoffman threw himself totally into the job, Carla kept the two worlds apart-going so far to keep her own sexual preferences from her partner. Her attitudes on the job and off the job are totally different. That isn't to say that in extreme situations those attitudes don't come together. You can't be a complete atomoton as a police officer-even one that fights zombies. As it is, due to her diagnosis of "Undead Apathy", Carla is watched somewhat closely. Then again, so are half the officers in the Los Angeles Police Department and the Undead Task Force.*
On the job Carla is polite, professional, and courteous unless provoked. While John-John tends to act more as the silent muscle, Carla can be outspoken and boisterous if required, however she prefers to order individuals to stand aside and allow her to do her job. Nine times out of then people are screaming and running so this is rather easy to accomplish. Carla is creative under fire, courageous, intuitive, and has a natural knack for behaving in dangerous situations. The reverse of this however, is that when it comes to solid police work Carla might be a bit slow on the uptake. She's the kind of girl sent in on missions who might eventually be promoted to Detective if she caught a break-not the kind of person to climb steadily up the ranks. Carla is at the stage of her career where procedure can be dangerous. An entire episode is devoted to attempting to define if someone is a PUS potentially undead suspect. Believing that this wastes valuable time-Carla discarded her card and happily shot the Lt. who came up with the idea when he was bitten by a zombie.
(It's worth it to note that she has some skill in report writing and tends to do that for John-John. It's that trait which has gotten her noticed by Captain Dashell and the UTF team.)
On the Job facing the undead or facing a threat Carla slips into a mode of self defense bordering on apathy and almost complete sociopathy. Officers are trained to act to defend themselves and others when a personal threat occurs. That threat-threat of Great Bodily Harm or injury-is an almost constant in her job. Consequently, she tends to treat it with an accepted nonchalance. She will do what it takes to survive because she is aware that people CAN be killed and she does not want to die. However, that drive to live can sometimes make her more apathetic towards the people who are about to die.
If you're going to die, and you've been bitten by a zombie or a vampire, Carla will put you down. She feels absolutely no empathy towards individuals who have been infected by anything. While she will accept both states (inhuman and human) the transitory in between is something she prefers to "Get it over with". Carla does not understand anyone who would CHOSE vampirism or accept it. She believes in equality for equality's sake-and the only reason why she treats vampires, werewolves, and other creatures normally is because she has an utmost ironclad respect for the law. The best way to phrase it is-her prejudices are there but she keeps them to herself. Whatever she feels-if it does not impact the job then it's not something she needs to worry about or express emotion on.
That means however, that if wounded by supernatural means (and potentially by regular means) she might tell people to tough it out or respond in a somewhat blank manner. This won't make her an ideal warden, but being called on it would at least encourage her to accept/take a look at what's going on. Given that their world is a world in which the undead have invaded the valley and frightening creatures are roaming around (her captain's niece is turned into a vampire) Carla is remarkably calm about all of it. It would be good for her to notice that there is something WRONG with being that calm especially since the Valley is assumed to be a typical 2011 valley.
Off the job, Carla is almost painfully normal. She will never allow her inmate glimpses of her personal life, communication to other wardens will be strictly enforced. She's been hurt before blurring the two lines and she does not intend to do it again. As she and her inmate become closer, she will allow the inmate (just as she allowed her partner) glimpses into who she is and what she does. She's aiming for that, (that will be a milestone as far as inmate rehabilitation is) but she doesn't really know how to earn that trust.
She shares some of her father's prejudices about criminals (they're all guilty) however unlike her father, she's willing to accept that sometimes people cannot CONTROL the consequences of their actions. (they do not have anyone to put a bullet in their head when they become a zombie) therefore they are capable of either following the rules (such as werewolves and lock-ins) or incapable and represent a threat (such as zombies). She has no sympathy for people who chose to change, and while she might find people who are different unusual and slightly disgusting she will treat them with respect. In summation. Carla's motto is "I might not like you, but I'll respect you." She applies that to every aspect of her life.
In private (in the bedroom, with close friends) she can be sweet, but almost all of the time she takes charge. Carla is an Alpha dog until given a bigger better Alpha dog to follow. Then she will willingly slip into her beta role no matter what her personal viewpoint on that particular "superior" might be. A good example of this is Captain Dashell who regularly hits on John-John and is sort of the department goofball. While she might not think he's the best "cop", she knows he cares and she knows he does the good work when the chips are down. Therefore, she'll be by his side gun-drawn and ready to fight.

History:
Carla Renaldi is a cop from a family of cops. Her father, mother, and two brothers are all LAPD scattered throughout various parts of the city. She grew up in a household where you couldn't get away with anything without a third degree, cases were regularly discussed over the dinner table, and while their father (Homicide Detective Mike Renaldi) tried to shield his only daughter from the job that only made Carla more interested. Out of all of the family, Carla's the only one who wanted into the business. Her brothers both fought like tigers against the idea-one going so far as to go to Vegas and actually train tigers with one of the magic shows.
Eventually however, her father's retirement and subsequent movement into the private sector prompted Paul to come home. Paul had words with their father, got his degree, passed out of the academy and became a CSI tech-forever delivering an unconscious fuck you to their dad who was hoping for both of his sons to follow in his footsteps (Mike Jr joining the K-9 squad as soon as he was able to do so).
Her brother Paul (forever earmarked with the name "Tiger" thanks to his half-assed attempt at becoming a magician) is the brother closest to her. Paul is the Renaldi with a sense of humor and the one who tempers Carla's nasty tendencies at being a bitch. He's also the only one who knows she's bisexual with a preference towards women. Something that her family has quite a few personal feelings about.
Carla went to a two year college to study for her Associate's Degree in Criminal Law before graduating. Going into the academy, she met her future partner John-John. Pulling him through the academy, she joined the vice squad right out of the gate. John-John worked Homicide and the two stayed in close contact with each other.
Out of everyone, Carla knows what it's like to have hard luck. Refusing to go undercover and displaying quite a few prejudices towards the people that she "busted", Carla was soon taught the error of her ways by Lilian. Lilian was a street walker and a crack addict. She was also a former law student who managed-the day they met-to defend herself enough to the point that Carla let her go with a warning. She returned that night however, with food, and encouraged Lilian to get into a treatment facility. She held Lilian's hand throughout the process and the two became friends which eventually translated to lovers.
Lilian had a huge impact on Carla however, as Lilian was the first person to abuse Carla's trust. She used her position as a "copfucker" to get ahead, and despite taking everything that Carla offered and doing something with it-she also tried to get an in for her and extort favors from the young police officer. Lilian eventually went to work for the public defender and began to try and persuade Carla to testify on behalf of the defense-on trials where people were guilty and showed absolutely no remorse for their crimes. Eventually, Lilian managed to convince Carla to lone her money to "move out of California" and never repaid it. The two rarely speak.
Since then, Carla has kept her personal and her professional life apart. On the job she is ALL about the job. Off the job she is wild, rebellious-and very few people actually know what she does for a living. It's worth it to note that she's almost embarrassed by it. This also led to her transfer from Vice to Homicide. When she transferred to Homicide, she was partnered almost instantly with John-John. The two wracked up a solid case closure rate.
When the undead invaded the valley, Carla was on a call with John-John. They ended up in Griffeth Park-where they managed to hold off the undead rising from the hollywood cemetary. After shooting John Wayne in the face, something snapped for Carla Renaldi and she discovered she had a penchant-a knack-for taking out the undead. Officer's called it "Undead Apathy." Diagnosed as a clinical condition, Carla was apparently told that this condition, while a potential hazard in relationships that could degenerate into complete sociopathy, made her an ideal recruit for the LAPD's new undead task force. John-John volunteered and the two were partnered right away.
The two were partnered, and the events of the series begin.

After the fight at the peace summit, the admiral appeared to the UTF at large with a deal. After an argument, Carla decided to go as a "representative of the valley and the LAPD." Her deal-for advanced zombie fighting equipment-probably perplexed the guy, but as she said "we can handle it".
Sample Journal Entry: [Video]
[the camera turns on to reveal a woman-the thing is-Carla knows how prisons work. She's been reading your network posts. So when she turns on the camera she's got on her uniform complete with her great big badge and her great big-bloody-baseball bat slung over one shoulder.]
I have been reading through the network, I have seen the psychosis, and I don't give a shit.
The sheer number of people bitching is outmatched only by the number of people telling others to shut the fuck up.
However, as a duly appointed representative of the UTF and by extension the LAPD I am... [she drops the bat slightly, hitting against her knee. This close to the camera-it's pretty easy to see something that looks like blood stains] here to inform you that as a warden I will listen, I will care, and I will do this job to the best of my ability. Human, meta human, insect, reptilian, vampiric, or undead, we at the UTF feel that you are entitled to all due protection under the law. I'm Carla Renaldi and I am here to- [she rolls her eyes] make sure all of you are safe.
[there is a pause]
I warn you however, that should you impede me attempting to do said job in any way shape or form will result in me blowing your fucking head off.
I know you all come back from it.
Sample RP:
It was a joke. They'd gone from a giant thing leaping out of a private peace treaty-fully televised-to a great big beam of something coming down and offering the Unit a once-in-a-lifetime deal. One inmate for a deal-any deal. Bring back somebody, keep somebody safe from harm outlast a psychotic collection of murderers and thieves and cut-throats and in return...anything they wanted.
Of course the group at large was approached, of course they all wanted to go. Stubeck argued that he needed it for his kid's college fund. John-John argued that he needed to heal back and better then ever. Kirsten argued they needed some new zombie fighting equipment and if this guy could hop out of the sky and do a dance then they could sure as fuck use it. The argument rose to a din, Carla quietly agreed with Kirsten, and Captain Dashell spoke up.
"What about Natalie?"
That had set them all quiet. Natalie had been caught in the crossfire. Not dead but turned, not dead but still alive, not dead but-
"I'll go."
They all stopped dead quiet and Carla was reminded of the scene in Jaws where the old fisherman had scratched nails on the chalk board. When they all spoke at once again, Carla didn't say a word. A life for a life. One inmate, rehabilitated, in exchange for Natalie being returned to human. No more stealing blood from the hospital, no more being part of an illicit street gang, none of that.
"That guy said it was going to get wild."
Carla lifted up her suitcase, "...What you don't think I can handle wild?" After everything they had been through, a wild cruise through space sounded..ludicrous but almost like a vacation.
John John didn't relent. Instead of saying anything he set his baseball bat on Carla's bedspread and stepped back. She picked it up, feeling the smooth silver between her hands and looked back at him. He stepped forward and wrapped his arms around her, "When you get back, we're taking a real vacation to someplace out of the valley. I'm thinking maui. Or Kauai."
"Nobody goes to Kauai."
John-John pulled her close and kissed her long and deep. She dropped the bat to the floor with a clank, "We do."
"On what, our salaries?"
"Doesn't this admiral pay you?"
"The deal's the payment, jesus christ JJ I thought you were paying attention when the big light came out of the sky and told us what the fuck to do!"
"Well I'm sorry-"
"Sorry doesn't cut it asshole! Look at this, here he is-" the room was beginning to fill with light, "God you'll probably make me look bad my first day..."
She shouldered the suit case and John-John passed over the bat in one smooth motion. He raised a hand and said something-it sounded like "right" or "be all right" but she lost it in the din of fog and noise that her world had become.
---
She awoke in her room.
"John John?" She dropped the bag, "I wouldn't have bothered to pack if I had known the guy was full of shit..." she let the bat slide to the floor and opened the door to her bedroom. She crossed through her apartment and opened the door to the rest of the building-a long sharp dark brown thing with a dead swimming pool amid a collection of houses.
She opened the door to a smooth deck and row upon row of other doors that looked like something out of a fantasy book.
She closed the door to her own apartment quickly and sat back against the wood. Her fingers gripped the carpet as reality-sheer reality-set in. Griffeth park all over again. The undead out of the ground- and she'd survived.
She stopped short and stared at the floor.
Sometime later(never mind how long) she picked up the smooth black item from her desk and clicked it on and off, playing with the features as she began to read.
Special Notes: Carla will be coming to the barge with John-John's bat. He gave it to her as means of protection. Congratulations barge, you just got a small female Donny Donowitz.
