prank, no white flag above my door (pam/karen) pg-13 websofseaweed July 18 2009, 22:45:46 UTC
Pam and Karen are planning something.

Jim doesn’t know what - he’s not sure he wants to know why his ex-girlfriend is suddenly all chummy with his…well, he doesn’t quite know what Pam is, really. Whatever it is they’re doing, though, they’ve been practically inseparable for the past few weeks.

Whenever he turns around, Karen’s leaning against Pam’s desk, usually with a great big grin on her face. Once or twice they’ve snuck off to the bathroom together, only to come out twenty minutes later looking slightly flushed and giggling. The other morning when he pulled into work he saw Pam climbing out of the passenger seat of Karen’s car.

He doesn’t quite know what to think. He kind of thought pulling pranks was his and Pam’s thing. If he’s being honest with himself, it hurts to see the looks she and Karen share sometimes. She’s drifting away from him, he thinks, but it’s different than before - before, he’d been the one to sever their ties, leaving her moored at port while he sailed off to better things; this time, she’s cut the line herself.

He contemplates asking them what they’re planning. Maybe he can help out - he can distract Dwight while they carry out whatever joke it is they’re orchestrating.

He hopes it’s going to be a damn good prank, because all of this wondering is taking its toll.

Pam lightly drags her finger down Karen’s bare back, then back up. Karen shivers slightly and turns around to face her.

“What are you doing, you goof?” she asks, reaching up to push Pam’s curls out of her eyes.

“Drawing,” Pam replies with a grin.

“What’re you drawing?” Karen asks. She quirks her eyebrow.

“You,” Pam answers. Karen pretends to look shocked.

“You’re drawing me…on me? Now that just doesn’t make any sense!” she exclaims, but the sparkle in her eyes gives her away. Pam lightly swats at Karen’s shoulder; she’s got that look in her eyes that says there’s something on her mind. Karen waits for her to speak - that’s the key to living with Pam. Patience. It's what Roy didn't have; it's what Jim couldn't have.

Karen smiles at Pam and taps lightly on Pam's nose. She looks down, blushing, and pulls the covers into a bunch in her fist.

“Karen...have you noticed Jim? He’s been...looking at us. Weirdly."

Karen knows what she’s talking about. She’s noticed him hunched over his desk, floppy hair falling over his eyes as they bore into her back.

“Do you think he...knows?” Pam bites her lip. Karen tries not to laugh, but she can't help herself; a little giggle escapes her throat before she can stop it.

"Pam, do you really think he could be so dense as not to know? I mean, we haven't come out and said it, but we've done everything else." Karen licks her lips. "Everything else. I mean...if he didn't know before we went into the bathroom on Thursday-"

"Okay!" Pam exclaims, blushing, and Karen can't help but think that it's so like Pam to be embarrassed, despite the fact that she's lying naked in bed, limbs tangled with those of an equally clothesless Karen.

"I mean, Pam, the size of that hickey on your boob-"

"Karen!" Pam shrieks, and Karen thinks she's never seen Pam blush this much. It's cute, the way the color spreads from her neck down to her chest, shading her skin pink. "He - he couldn't see my boob, anyway. So ha." Pam looks smug.

"Well, then, he could always look at the one on your neck," Karen reminds her. Pam groans and buries her head into Karen's stomach.

"God, you are so embarrassing. Why am I dating you?" Pam groans. Karen affectionately runs her hands through Pam's curls.

"Because I'm sexy and funny and everything you ever wanted. And I make a mean vegetable stir-fry." Karen wiggles her eyebrows at Pam. Pam snorts and throws her hands in the air.

"How could I have forgotten?" she exclaims. "When you propose to me, I expect a dowry comprised entirely of stir-fry."

Karen sticks her tongue out. "Fine."

Pam imitates her. "Fine."

When it finally hits Jim one morning as he watches Karen sneak a kiss on Pam's cheek (and Pam's ensuing blush) when she thinks no one's looking, all he can think is that he did so not see this one coming.

OH. MY. GOD.

This is so adorable, I don't even think there are words. Jim being in the dark, that whole conversation in bed ("He - he couldn't see my boob, anyway. So ha." Pam looks smug. SO CUTE.), Pam's dowry and then Jim finally figuring it out? Best thing in the history of things!
