There's quite the buzz going on around here. It seems that this volunteer center and this Habitat for Humanity affiliate have been selected for MTV's alternative spring break this year. Everyone's talking about it. My team and I are in the process of training the team that's going to lead the MTV volunteers in roofing, vinyl siding, flooring, and painting(as those are our main areas of expertise). Everywhere you turn it's MTV this and MTV that. It's a little strange that 400 screaming MTV volunteers will be living where I'm living and working where I'm working.
I've discussed this with the site supervisors at the Habitat affiliate. Most of them would very much like to be sick that week, or at the very least wear a paper bag over their heads every day at work until the cameras leave. The volunteer center is VERY conservative and religious. They are the kind of people that ask you to change if you're wearing a short skirt. They strategically stack all the books in the common areas so there are bibles on top. If you put another book on top, the next day the bible will have magically floated to the surface. I can't help but wonder if this will be a total disaster. Perhaps a disaster will be good for MTV's ratings, but not so much good for the people here. They appreciate the help, but they could do without the cameras. I think that goes for most of the people I've met in the gulf coast.
I won't have cable when this thing is on, but if I did, I would be tempted to watch this alternative spring break thing hoping for the best, but expecting the worst.
