How can I duplicate and lighten it up?

In the layers palette you can right click on your base and then select duplicate or drag the layer to the small square in the lower right hand corner.

Then set the blending mood to screen from the drop down menu.

First of all, thanks for the tutorial - I definitely needed that.

Second, what font did you use for the "blending mode" and "drag" text? Pretty nifty. =)
