In regards to
what Georgia wrote this morning, while I agree that the compendiums are the Tale version of blogging, with its own politics and problems, I'd still like to say a few words about Dottie Fairchild, especially for those who never met her or even knew her before they read about her name here.
The first time I met Dottie was late in the autumn of 1984 (October-November); I was 22 and had only found out I was a Tale about eight months before, when the Modern's illustious Head Librarian, Patricia (she was a hottie back then, let me tell you), came all the way to England to tell me about the Atheneum and handed me this book. Isn't this down memory late? In MY day, you young wipper-snappers...!
I was insanely curious about this whole Tale business, so I decided to visit America: I'd always wanted to see New York City anyway. The talk on the compendium was a lot more boring then, and whenever I'd write, hardly anybody would respond. Later, when I came here, I found out why: they'd been excluding me from their conversations by privatizing them. I was one of the new sensations - the first of the Modern Tales to appear. At that time, there were only three of us (I believe, if I'm wrong, correct me) - Patricia, Kevin and myself. There were a lot of people who were freaking out because we were the new Tales on the block, wondering what this meant for them and the Atheneum. In general, there were an awful lot of negative vibes floating around, all the while blocking us from their discussions and giving us the cold shoulder. If it wasn't for a few key people, I would've completely written this whole Tale business off.
Dottie was one of those people. She took the time to speak with me while I was staying at the Pen to discuss what it means being a Tale. She almost 70, and delightfully eccentric, which fed into my Wonderlander nature. She was kind, but also firm - we didn't completely agree on everything, but I never felt alienated. She was wise, which she carried over from her Aseopeon Tale, and had a talent of diffusing hostile situations. She also made the best damn pastries I'd ever tasted.
I know that as Tales we all recycle, so for us there is no end. She'll will come back in another body, as another person. But I'll miss the incarnation that was Dottie Fairchild.
