It was more than a little disheartening that the highlight of Jess's day was getting the clothing box in the basement to cough up a decent pair of shoes. Once upon a time she thought she was going to change the world; now she was happy when she got to change her clothes.
Nevertheless, she did have new shoes and she was heading back into her and Sam's house (okay, her and Sam's and Sam's father's and Sam's brother's house) to show them off, but one look at the way Sam was sprawled on the bed with his arm over his eyes and the shoes were forgotten.
"Sam?" she said, dropping them by the rest of her things. "Is everything all right?"
