“That’s wonderful, Amy.”
“It is, isn’t it?” She replied, taking a victory spin in Xander’s desk chair. She had chased him out of the room ten minutes ago, just before deciding to give Meredith a call. Ben was already well aware of the move, in fact, he had encouraged it long before it was a reality. He claimed that he was lonely in Berkley, and even though Amy was sure that he was just lying to sound supportive, his presence in California had made an impact on her. It wasn’t going to be easy starting over, but with her brother already in the area and his ridiculously frigid girlfriend so upset over it, she thought it would be great. Just great.
“Yes, and its such a surprise! I had no idea that you and Alexander were that serious.”
“Xander.” Amy corrected, trying to contain her amusement. “And he spent Christmas with us, remember?” Amy knew that Meredith had to remember. Xander had been the hit that she somehow still wasn’t, although everyone had been much more comfortable with her the third time around. She was a part of the family now, and for the most part, Amy had accepted that.
“I do. I remember. Its just that living together in a town you’ve chosen is one thing, but moving across the country, well that’s…I said it was serious, didn’t I?”
“That you did.” She agreed. She found it was always better to keep it short and sweet with Meredith, otherwise the ‘witch’ accusations came out on both sides, and Ben started talking about family mediation. His intentions were…well, pretty selfish if she thought about them, but she wasn’t sure that she could blame him. Her big brother just wanted his fiancée and his little sister to get along. It wouldn’t have been so much to ask if they hadn’t been two entirely different types of people.
“Oh, well. Congratulations. Really. It’ll be good for Ben to have a family member so close by.”
And there it was. Finally. It had taken her eleven minutes to break her, but Amy had finally managed to get it out. The tick. The one that everyone swore that Meredith hadn’t done in months. Oh, she had known Ben was lying, but being the one to bring it out of her made this so much better.
The throat clear was back.
“Thanks Mer. Hey, I gotta go. I stole Xander’s office and I think he wants it back.” Amy smiled, pleased with how things were working out. She and Xander were going to get a fresh start in California, and Meredith was back to her overanxious ways.
Life could be so good sometimes.
