disclaimer. I wrote this. All by myself. So, it's mine. Don't steal it. Please.
a/n. I listened to "Almost Lover" by A Fine Frenzy and "Gravity" by Sara Bareilles while writing this. Not so much for the lyrics as for the tone. I hope you enjoy. :) Also, I know I'm totally breaking the rules by posting it here, but the PBs are Kristen & Gaspard + it's angsty. You know you love me!

Maybe it was meant to be, he says to her. She glares at him with hateful eyes and turns her back. The walk away from him is long, but worth it when she breathes in the fresh air waiting for her around the corner.

She can smell his cologne on her jacket and it takes everything she has to not let the tears fall. Instead, she keeps walking, her heels clicking against the sidewalk.

*

I miss you, he says to her when she finally picks up the phone. She deletes all the messages he leaves, saying it was a mistake to let her go.

Her eyes flicker across the mirror in front of her where she's taped up pictures of them throughout their relationship. The one at the beach in California is her favorite. He smiles down at her as she grins at the camera. They're picture perfect, her mother says.

She sits on her bed for hours, listening to him beg for her forgiveness. She knows she'll give in when it comes down to it, but she's not ready yet.

*

His fingertips across her skin make her shiver, but she represses it the best she can. She doesn't want him to know the kind of power he still has over her. Not after all they've been through.

You're it for me, he whispers in her ear for the millionth time. Yeah, yeah, she's heard that line before.

*

Her father shakes his hand and her mother kisses him on the cheek when they walk in the front door. She hates how much they love him. She wishes they'd tell her how he wasn't good enough for her, how she could do much better.

But she knows they never will and that hurts her deeper than anything else ever could.

*

He takes her out to a fancy restaurant for their one-year anniversary of being a couple and she thinks that this might be the turning point in their relationship. She comments on how expensive it must be and he says, Only the best for you, baby.

She ends up paying for half of the two hundred dollar bill.

*

She sits down on a nearby chair at one of the many high school parties. He's off with his friends in another room doing God knows what. Another boy eyes her from the left and tries to start up a conversation.

He's back in a flash with his arm around her. The protective streak flares once again. Some things will never change.© cresents; 2008. property of brittany s.
