Doing social work within the faculty

Feb 03, 2010 13:40

I wrote a paper on the social problem of transgender oppression and the implications for social work practice. My awareness of trans issues increased at an exponential rate while doing research for the paper, only to show me how much I have yet to learn and leave me wondering what yet unquestioned gender assumptions I hold, what binary gender norms I practice and enforce, and how my cisgender privilege plays out and what I can do about it.

I also want to figure out how to get transgender issues to be required content in the U of M BSW program, because I have only two courses left and so far there has been absolutely minimal, if any, coverage, even though they are one of the most marginalized populations, and training students to support and advocate for marginalized populations is supposed to be the aim of the program.

Next year I can join the BSW PROGRAM COMMITEE - "The BSW Program Committee is responsible for overseeing and developing policy and program recommendations for the BSW Program. These recommendations may come from the Admissions, Academic Standings, or Course Standardization Groups, or be initiated by the BSW Program Committee. Recommendations from the BSW Program Committee are submitted to the Dean and to Faculty Council (regarding matters of admissions, curriculum, standards, resource /staffing needs, etc.)."

I'll have to find out in the mean time if I can submit something to them. I'll contact the student council because they're responsible to appoint student reps to the committees and should have some idea about how they operate.
