He holds the package close to his face. Unwraps the cheap cellophane. Pops the lid open. Savory scent, cloves, spices, cinnamon. Almost like fig cookies.

He closes the cartons, thumps it against the heel of his hand repeatedly. Packs the tobacco a little tighter.

Removes a cylinder. Lights it. Breathes deeply.

Smoke. Inhale. Exhale.

It fills his lungs and he gets that first head rush of nicotine.

Thousands of chemicals rush through his blood stream at a million miles an hour.

He uses whole milk. None of that healthy one percent or skim bullshit. If he’s consuming extra calories, he’ll do it right, thank you very much.

The chocolate has to be perfect, too. It’s derived from cao cao beans straight out of Mideel. He melts the blocks in his microwave himself, adding plenty of sugar.

He folds in a little milk to even the temperature out before dumping the mixture in a blender. On a whim, he tosses in a couple of ice cubes and a spoonful of black coffee.

Rude thinks it’s a lot of trouble for chocolate milk.
