About Ella's "Gift"/Curse

Why can't Ella break her curse while in SP?

This would probably be the most asked question, especially since there are people in SP who would want to help Ella break her curse. Basically, the reason is this: The stakes aren't high enough. Simply wanting to break her curse for herself is not enough to do it. In canon - both movie and book form - Ella can't break her curse until the stakes are as high as possible - as in being for the sake of the person and kingdom she loves. The likelihood of those requirements being met are fairly minimal.

Also a recent develop in IC Play, Black Mask has ordered Ella to not seek out a means of removing her gift. But that doesn't mean she's given up.

So how does Ella's curse work anyway?

This one is a little bit iffy. Basically, if you phrase a sentence to her as an order, she has to do it. This can be as innocuous as 'Get me the remote/Get me a sammich' to something as direct and mean as "Kick that old dude in the keister and steal his money." It's all a matter of phrasing. Frequently orders are given without them even being meant as such.

If she doesn't want to obey a curse, or she suspects they don't really mean the order, she tends to try a 'loophole' in the curse. Namely, asking someone to reiterate the command to see if they really mean what they say. For example, someone might jokingly say, "Go jump out a window." She would in fact, have to do just that. But if she knows it to be a joke, she might say 'Do I have to?' or 'Are you serious?' and if she gets a response in the negative, she doesn't have to follow the command. This only works for some commands though - harmless ones she tends to just go ahead with anyway. Like making sammiches.

Loopholes in the command can be found if she thinks carefully about how the order was phrased. "Come here, Ella." May have her take a tiny step closer to who said it. Or she'll take a very long, and slow route to reaching them, perhaps in the hopes that they'll give up.

Some commands are stronger than others, as well. For example, in canon her mother told her not to tell anyone about her curse. If Ella were to meet someone now, and they told her to tell them about said curse, she would be physically and mentally incapable of telling anyway. The curse - or gift - would make certain of that. In another situation, she is commanded to get in an ogre's stew pot, which she began to comply with. Immediately after, her friend told her 'Forget that'. This was taken literally as not only did she forget the last command, but she forgot about the one who made the command too.

Is there any way she can avoid fulfilling a command?

Yes, yes there is. If it's a text format command, if she can successfully guess at what the order is, or might be, before she actually finishes reading it, she can stop reading. As long as she doesn't read the whole sentence, she doesn't have to follow the order.

Verbally it's trickier. If someone gives her a direct command such as "Don't talk to X anymore." or "Go and kill X." she can avoid this as long as she doesn't see that person directly after the command is given. This can be subverted by Ella herself manages to send a message or speak with the person before she carries out the command. For example, in the movie, she is commanded to kill the Prince, who she had feelings for. Though she at first tries to keep from carrying out the command by getting herself chained to a tree, she does eventually see the Prince. She asks him to tell her to stay away, for her to never see him again - which he obviously doesn't do.

But if he had told her to get out of his sight or something similar, she would have been able to leave without carrying out the first order.

Can I find out about Ella's curse?

Certainly. She does her level best to avoid having people find out though, so it might be tricky! IC Resistance to the idea is not OOC resistance <3 OH, and I should mention that wizards may be able to "see" her curse if they have some kind of magical spellsight. Harry Dresden, for example, has Wizard Sight, so if he used it when looking at Ella, he'd see she was under the 'curse'.

Can I find out about her curse and manipulate her to my advantage?

Ella will most likely hate you forever, but yes. :3
