Yeah I've heard from some knitters who find crochet daunting (which always baffles me). I've also had one shop owner expound to me on his theory that knitting is more "feminine" and crocheting more "masculine", as in people who prefer one over the other tend to be more of one quality than the other...which strikes me as odd because, if anything, I would give knitting a more masculine designation since it is worked pretty strictly on a grid and crocheting is more feminine to me since it seems very organic to me and one CAN free-form with it easily. You can't do that with knitting from my observations. Although, knitting does yield a thinner fabric which conserves yarn and is often more flattering for garments.
Socks are more often knitted than crocheted (if they're crocheted, they end up more like slippers than socks) but darning is the technique often used to mend socks. I hear you---part of the reason I decided to start knitting socks is because---oh wait did I mention this in my journal entry? My socks are falling to pieces like Patsy Cline?
Give knitting another shot. It took me almost ten years to get a good grip on it, myself.

Knitting is harder for me too. OTOH, I know of knitters who are scared to death of crocheting, so I think it depends on the person.

I've never crocheted in my life, which is probably not a good thing as my socks could do with me having l33t crocheting skillz. ;p
My knitting is also exceedingly rusty - I'm about 22 years out of practice and wasn't very good to start with!
