SPN Thoughts & a Season 9 Wishlist

Recently I've been doing a rewatch of Supernatural, starting with season 4. By now I'm about halfway through season 5 and Oh. My. Goodness! I forgot just how incredibly suspenseful and intense SPN can be. Next to that, watching the episodes closely together, the story and the characters seem to have a much bigger impact on me. For instance I have really come to appreciate Cas. Lately, I've merely been thinking about him as "that cute, confused angel with a crush on Dean who could have made an awesome villain but you blew that, didn't you?". I forgot just how much he kicks ass. And what a snarky little shit he can be.

What I'm saying is that by now my favorite characters are Sam-Dean-Cas. The order is absolutely random, because the whole Team Free Will is just equally awesome (and equally induces in me the urge the slap them when they're being idiots. Which they're being on a regular basis).

Anyway, that made the little gears in my head turn and think and speculate and hope for season 9.

A Season 9 Wishlist...and some speculation on Cas

⇒ A darker mood. I like to watch SPN as a horror show (not gore! Horror. Please not the difference), not as a comedy. Give me this noir-ish feeling and please, please, please a frightening antagonist. We haven't had one since season 5 and Team Free Will needs a challenge. I'd love to see a smart, frightening antagonist, not some simple bully.

⇒ While I love the 'Men of Letters' concept, I hope we steer away from the idea that Sam is Mr. Reserach / The Brain and Dean is Mr. Huner / The Brawn. I truly enjoy it when we get to see smart and competent Dean and some really kick-ass Sam. In fact, I've always been partial to the whole the-boy-with-the-demon-blood storyline and I'd like to see Sam still being a little bit something different. But truthfully? As long as we get to see smart!Dean and Sam kicking ass, I'm likely to be happy.

⇒ I hope they won't overdo it with Crowley. He's tolerable in small doses but just can't hold a candle to "Good Omens" Crowley.

⇒ More Adam Winchester, please. I have a soft spot for him.

⇒ I'd really love to see Cas being way more than "a baby in a trenchcoat". While I truly enjoy the Winchester boys having worked out their issues, I'm most excited for Cas' story. He's all alone, suddenly human and heaven and hell are hunting him. Now while I don't need Superman!Cas, I really want to see him being more than the comic relief. Let's say Cas has lost all his powers and is 100% human, he still has his knowledge. Can we imagine how many languages he can speak? How much lore, spells etc. he's likely to know? The...erm...ex-angel has probably fought for millenia, so it's likely he knows quite a bit about strategy etc. So for all I care, make him weak even for a human, but make him outsmart his enemies at least. Of course, personally, I'd be really thrilled if Cas goes old testament and grabs a bow or a short sword and goes 'Do you people seriously think I've forgotten how to use this? Troy isn't that long ago!' And don't even get me started on the Crusades. He can then, for all I care, go back to marvelling about bowel movements but I absolutely need to see badass!Cas.
