Fandom: Circle of Magic
Character: Rosethorn
Prompt: Past
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 300
Summary: maybe you’re better off without me

5. “Yes, well I’m sure with your background, you wouldn’t understand nobility.” That takes her by surprise. She’s used to their verbal sparring, but pulling family into the mix is something they’ve always stepped around. She’s told him more about her past than she’s told anyone else, and she doesn’t think it’s fair for him to use this against her. She walks away from him. It’s all she can do.

4. She doesn’t notice when he walks into the room, because she’s busy trying to pretend that it doesn’t matter that she’s sitting by herself. And it doesn’t, usually. It takes her several seconds to realize that everyone is watching the door. She looks up, and sees him framed with the sun behind his body. The moment ends, and he strides into the room, sweeping his robes about as if he’s a noble. And, as everyone watches, he sits at her table.

3. He tells her that he’s afraid of failure as they sit outside on the damp grass and look up at the stars. He tells her about the responsibility of his name and how his every action will either bring honor or damnation. She doesn’t know what to say. She’s seen horrible things in her life, but to worry about your every breath….

2. “That was a good idea,” he says. “Thank you.” It’s the first time he’s ever complimented her, and she wonders if he realizes this fact. She smiles at him.

1. He kisses her as they stand together in the rain, waiting for Dedicate Mapleleaf to come back and tell them-surprise, surprise-that no epidemics have occurred. They’re like two street urchins out here in the slums. It isn’t decent; they’re supposed to be students, focused on learning, not on kissing out here in the rain. She doesn’t care.
