Nothing I said or did seemed to register, nor did they recognise me, so it would seem they have both become drones.
Perhaps one can believe that, in some way, those who become like this really return home and are not in fact forced to live this empty, shell-like existence. Either way, I will keep an eye on them and can only hope they will be safe in their current state.
