(Okay, I really shouldn't be writing this, as my next participant's about to turn up at any moment and we're not supposed to use these computers for anything other than work, but I just had a revelation that I have to share with you all.)
For the longest time, since I first read the first Harry Potter book, I have had a strong belief that Neville will die at the end of Book 7. This is not something I've ever really questioned, and I've never wondered why I believe this, I just do. In the long R/Hr fic I'm writing at the moment, I have Neville die in the final battle (slight spoiler there), and my beta reader asked me why, and I couldn't think what to say. I can't really imagine the final battle without Neville dying. But just now, I realised why.
Neville is Oswald.
Has anyone ever read the Deptford Mice books by Robin Jarvis? There's some more information about Oswald
here, but basically (SPOILER ALERT), he was a friend of the heroes in the books, he was a bit of a figure of fun, being pale and sickly, and although he didn't seem very brave, he was the bravest of all of them (in my opinion), because he had to overcome his fear instead of rushing off happily and recklessly into danger like his friends. He ended up becoming very important in the final book of the trilogy, fulfilling an ancient prophecy, and ultimately committing the final act of bravery and sacrificing himself in the final battle.
It turns out I've always connected Oswald and Neville in my mind (and Neville reminds me a bit of Twit as well - I wouldn't be at all surprised if Neville turns out to be in love with Ginny, but steps aside for Harry - not that I'm suggesting Ginny's about to be hanged for being a witch!), and because Oswald and Twit were my favourite characters in the Deptford books, that helps to explain why I love Neville so much.
Anyway, just thought I'd share. And I still believe Neville's going to die, as much as it saddens me.
