I'm so proud of the BBC this morning that I actually feel moved to post. Because last night, they did something groundbreaking and radical - and something that shouldn't be groundbreaking or radical, but hey, that's the world we live in - and treated the gay couple on their flagship show the same as they've been treating the het couples for the last 26 years.
And they not just gave us a bed scene - with a kiss, and cuddling, and actual talking - for pretty much the first time on a British primetime soap*, but it followed an amazing couple of episodes for this couple where they got to display the kind of physical affection that everyone else does.
Last night, this scene was shown on the most watched (arguably, depends how you measure it) scripted programme on British television at 8:25pm:
They're going to get complaints, that's a given, but they went ahead and did it anyway. I could almost cry. :D Massive step forward.
*Yes, Hollyoaks has shown its same-sex couples in bed together before, but HO is a teatime soap watched by 1-2 million at most rather than up to 12 million, and even HO always made sure one half of the pair was still clothed. This is flipping unique, okay?
