Introspection

Andrew is up here, yay! He brought Maddie and we're having a good time being mean to each other and doing what we like to do. On Tuesday, we went to the Holocaust museum in Washington DC - wow, what an overpowering experience. I don't think I can do justice to that place, the suffering those people went through defies all explanation. Most of us rational people acknowledge that the Holocaust did, in fact, happen, but it's a much different experience when you walk into a dim room and see two huge piles of shoes that were taken from just a few of the people the Nazis systematically murdered.

Hatred is a really scary thing. You listen to those speeches by those political leaders, and it really makes you think - did we learn anything from the Holocaust? Our bureaucratic policies on immigration at the time directly contributed to the deaths of untold millions of Jews, and yet today, we as a nation are just as self-centered as ever. What lessons did we learn from the atrocities of the Nazi party? And what's going to happen someday when it's us they come after?

In California, gays were just stripped of the right to marry. How long is it going to be until religious activists decide that we shouldn't be allowed to hold property, or claim citizenship, or survive? Yes, it's a huge leap, but in 1935, nobody foresaw what was going to happen in Germany. By 1945, 10,000,000 people had been exterminated.

It really makes you think.
