Obladi Oblada...
Today, we bought a house. It was suprisingly anticlimactic. We went to our lawyer's office, signed here, initialed there, repeated 7,659,431 times (by actual count*), turned over a check for a heart-stopping amount of money, agreed to pay back an equally heart-stopping amount of money, and then left. We own a beautiful old house in the Browncroft neighborhood of Rochester. The people who are there now will be out on June 2, we will meet them to get the keys, and go inspect our new manse.
I'm still torn. I love this new house, I truly do, and the garden is lovely. It'll be nice having enough room to invite more than two people to dinner at a time, it'll be wonderful to have room for people to come and stay without having to doom them to our basement rec room for sleeping. It will be beyond wonderful not to have to share a 28-inch closet with another person! But I will miss my little house. But, obladi oblada, eh?
Yesterday was Laura's first political rally, and my first in many many years. GWB came to town yesterday and spent a sickening couple of hours chuckling avuncularly for a hand-picked audience of mostly 29-and-unders, lying genially about Social Security and its future. Meanwhile, 1200 of us packed into the Unitarian church downtown to register our dismay with Shrub's privatization plans for SS. And, of course, the "liberal" media published an entire section of the newspaper this morning, gushing over his talk. Our rally was reported as being 700-strong, in about four column-inches. But the media's got a liberal bias, or so we're told.
I had surgery last Friday. I arrived at the hospital at 6:00 AM, went into surgery at 7:30, woke up in recovery at 9:30, and was home watching "Doctor Who" by 11:30. Surgery ain't what it used to be, is it? I can't drive and I can't lift, but otherwise, I feel fine. And thanks, but I'll decline to explain the purpose of the surgery. It's structural, not pathological, no worries.
