I had time to write more on The Warrior with No Name today during the treatment of the new well. Hopefully it will be a good well. God knows how much we need to impress the investors. Our livelihood and reputations are riding here. Being self-employed sucks.
The Warrior with No Name - chapter 15
I'm not sure about restrictions for smaller drilling companies (unless Obama or Clinton get into office--they want to take away the tax incentives, which would completely cripple us since our company consists of my parents, me, my husband and our driller), but the demand for oil, not only in America but in countries like China, has seriously pushed up transportation costs and that, in turn, pushes EVERYTHING up.
If we go back to horse and carriages, we have nothing to worry about. I would add an LOL here, but that's the sad truth about it. The only thing I can do is get my hammer bit in the ground and put a well on pump to try to ease some of the strain. It isn't much, but we do try. America could really use some more refineries, but I doubt that will happen. There's no way to hurriedly convert to an alternate fuel source right now. (And I'm not saying that because I'm part of an oil company. Alternate sources should have been found during the first crisis in the seventies.) We just drill it, pump it, and sell it to a purchasing company who, in turn, sells it to the refinery in Ashland, Kentucky.
I'm so going to get flamed for this post. I just need to stop writing now.

And then nuclear technology has really advanced. Most people are afraid of it, but they don't realize that MODERN reactors, like they've built in South Africa, literally can't go and blow up and spew radiation like everyone's afraid of. A good pebble bed reactor gives off less radiation than a coal burning powerplant.
Unfortunantly, once they're built noone is going to make a lot of money running them since the only thing they need is a bit of Uranium now and then, and that's cheap. Without the supply and demand aspect, big business doesn't like the idea.
Thanks for the informed response, though!
