Neverwhere FST Version 1.0! Huzzah!

Oct 10, 2007 00:28

... I have just created the first ever Neverwhere FST. I don't think it's really all that great, but I do love the songs and am happy to share them, so take a look! Again, let me know if there's ever any problem with the downloads or if they expire, and I'll re-upload them for you. Also, think I should cross-post this at fst or any of the Neil Gaiman/Neverwhere communities? Or, um. Not? :x

**********

1. Bond - Kashmir

There's no lyrics to this one, but believe me: best Instrumental ever. It's actually Bond's cover of a Led Zepplin song of the same name, so it might sound familiar; this version just... fits better. Personally, it makes me think of Hunter... especially the flashback of her in that other City Below. And just hunting. Listen to it and see if you don't agree.

The explanations in this fst will not be fancy, and they will not be long. They're just here to put the songs in a bit of perspectives. The chosen lyrics will do most of the actual explaining. ♥

2. Dashboard Confessional - Vindicated

I am vindicated
I am selfish
I am wrong
I am right
I swear I'm right
I swear I knew it all along

And I am flawed
But I am cleaning up so well
I am seeing in me now the things you swore you saw yourself

Most of these songs I just see as being general Neverwhere, really, but beginning of the chorus here reminds me quite clearly of the marquis, with the second bit being Richard, perhaps? I also can see this being a pretty fitting early-marquis song, when he is just discovering/getting into London Below. Now that's a story I'd like to hear. :3

3. Enya - Adiemus

Ariadiamus late ariadiamus da
ari a natus late adua

A-ra-va-re tu-e va-te
a-ra-va-re tu-e va-te
a-ra-va-re tu-e va-te la-te-a

A-na-ma-na coo-le ra-we
a-na-ma-na coo-le ra
a-na-ma-na coo-le ra-we a-ka-la...

This song doesn't actually mean anything. It's a practically-Instrumental, which means it's the feel that makes me think of Neverwhere--by the time it hits the chorus, I'm picturing the Floating Market quite clearly.

4. Flogging Molly - Whistles The Wind

My isolation
Now there's a sobering thought
A minute alone, a lifetime too long
See the face in this mirror
So pale it could crack
Desperately wantin' the color it lacks

Well it breaks my heart to see you this way
The beauty in life where's it gone
And somebody told me you were doin' okay
But somehow I guess they were wrong

So you drank with the lost souls
For too many years
Tied to their ankles now crippled with fear
Never been righteous though seldom were wrong
Life's only life with you in this song

I'm... not even entirely sure if this one fits. If it does, it's probably mostly Richard, maybe Richard/de Carabas? I'm really not certain about this one, and it's sad to say that it's the fact that it's Irish that made me include it, for the most part. (Yes, I know Irish is not the same as Scottish--but I just couldn't resist it. ;;;)

5. The Hush Sound - City Traffic Puzzle

Escape into the eerie night
In the dark I'm out of sight
Shadows on the alley wall
Are dancing like a lovers brawl

North south east and west
Foreign land is right and left
Don't let them see you cry
I didn't know which way was home
Ten degrees without a coat
Don't let them see you cry

I don't want to love you if love leaves me this cold
I don't want to love you if love is this alone

This song is just cool. :D Another... general Neverwhere, only the thing people might have to keep in mind is when I'm thinking about Neverwhere, I sorta tend to OT3 Richard, Door, and de Carabas (though I have to say my default OTP for the story is still de Carabas/Richard, I love Richard/Door and am intrigued by the thought of the three of them having a mutual arrangement). Anyway, this song is so upbeat without being cheerful, and the imagery of someone lost in a city, possibly even a familiar one... well!

6. Imogen Heap - Have You Got It In You?

It takes a lot to be always on form
It takes a lot
Or maybe not
All the time, all I've got
Maybe not

Been one of those days
Safety first, don't push
What's the hurry?
One nerve remaining, waiting on one look
Have you got it?
Have you got it in you?

General again! Though I see the first bit being about the marquis and Richard, respectively, and the Let me have it all, let me have a battle on, easy target, look can we just... just get it over with part to be rather Hunter-ish. Mostly, it seems to fit the novel as a whole in my head.

* * *

7. Imogen Heap - Hide and Seek

Where are we?
What the hell is going on?
The dust has only just begun to form
Crop circles in the carpet
Sinking feeling

Spin me round again and rub my eyes
This can't be happening
When busy streets a mess with people
Would stop to hold their heads heavy

Hide and seek
Trains and sewing machines
All those years
They were here first

General again! This actually spans the entire series better than any song I've heard, I think, or at least it did it first. I really do need to make a music video to this thing--after all, I'm making the first Neverwhere FST EVWAR, so I might as well make the first Neverwhere music video EVWAR too. >.> This is a beautiful song, and slightly surreal, and I think it captures the surreal quality of London Below and the events of the story quite well.

8. Imogen Heap - Leave Me To Love

All I tell them "I'm back" and I'm not
I can't remember where I was, I forgot
Knitting it all, these holes that I need
To crawl through a brick wall is hard to say the least...

... Tired of the tyrants who only think they're all bee's knees
Pissed with their patience, they constantly agree
"Yes sir, yes sir, three hundred bags full"
It's easier to say yes than to say no to a fool

Where's that thought, that thought uncomplicated things?
Where's that peace of mind, that peace that made it easy?
Where's that simple day, that simply made it nice to be in
Where did it go? Where did it go? Where did it go?

This was an... odd choice even for me, actually. It's a very jaded song, and a harsh way of looking at things, but... It's a very Richard-at-the-end-of-the-series song, I think. He was ripped out of his life and forced down into London Below, and tried so hard to get back, and now he is... and he can't stand it. He forgot how boring and meaningless it all was. And he can't handle the monotony anymore. He has to go back, if only because things will be interesting, and he might be able to do something more important than a 9-to-5 job.

9. McFly - Memory Lane

Two years away
I got back today
Tried calling up this girl I used to know
But when I said hello
She didn't know who the hell I was supposed to be

Memory Lane
We're here again
Back to the days
And I'll remember you always
So much has changed
Now it feels like yesterday I went away

THANKS TO alys_wonder. This is a total Richard song, talking, yes, about Jessica, but also about his life as a whole. He lost it when he went back to London Below, and he can't quite make it back--he's changed too much. But that doesn't mean he'll forget.

* * *

10. Motion City Soundtrack - Everything Is Alright

Give me a reason
To end this discussion
To break with tradition
To fold and divide

Cause I hate the ocean, theme parks and airplanes
Talking with strangers, waiting in line
I'm through with these pills that make me sit still
"Are you feeling fine?"
Yes, I feel just fine

Tell me that you're alright
Yeah everything is alright
Oh please tell me that you're alright
Yeah everything is alright

A very, very, very, very bouncy song. XD; Also, another Richard song! After London Below has changed him, again... beginning to see a pattern here? Again, disenchanted with his boring, meaningless life in the world Above, blah blah blah. It'll be alright. :3

11. Nightwish - Dead To The World

I don't want to die a scarless man
A lonely soul
(Tell me now what to do)

I studied silence to learn the music
I joined the sinful to regain innocence

Heaven queen, cover me
In all that blue
Little boy, such precious joy
Is dead to the world

Heaven queen, carry me
Away from all pain
All the same take me away
We're dead to the world

... Again, I honestly have no idea. None. Except some of the lines (I don't want to die a scarless man) remind me of the marquis, and the whole song is just... Well, it's gorgeous, but that's not a good reason to include it on a specific FST. I don't know, it always just feels like a Neverwhere song to me... and hey, even if you don't agree, free really awesome song. :D;;

12. Nightwish - Deep Silent Complete

in your creation heaven did decree
that in your arms sweet death should dwell

deep silent complete
black velvet sea
the sirens are calling for me

saved my soul thinking "this song is a lie"
sand on the shore is so dry

deep silent complete
black velvet sea
brave day sinking in endless night

And as alys_wonder pointed out to me, this is a very Islington song. And even psycho angels need love. :3 It does fit him very well, really, what with being a psycho angel and having sunk Atlantis and all. Ahaha. ;;

* * *

13. Oasis - Lyla

She's the queen of all I've seen
And every song and city far and near
Heaven help me mademoiselle
She rings the bell for all the world to hear

Hey Lyla
The star's about to fall -
So what you say Lyla
The world around us makes me feel so small Lyla
If you can hear me call then I can say Lyla
Heaven help you catch me if I fall

Thanks to alys_wonder again! X3 This song... Well, now I can't figure out if it's the marquis or Door. XD; Isn't that fun? Well, give it a listen--it's a very pretty song. *u-useless explanation orz*

* * *

14. Poe - Amazed

Wait, I thought I had this down
I built all my cages and my hide out
I covered all my bases
But you
You creep in like a whisper
I try not to listen but I hear you
I don't know just what it is you do
But do it again

I'm amazed
When push comes to shove what I'd give to you
Everything
I'm amazed
The walls that I wouldn't mind crashing through
And I'd do it for days and days

I'm amazed

If any of you support the aforementioned Richard/Door/de Carabas (er... perhaps not in that order) OT3, give this song a listen. It fits those three perfectly. It has a major spot in my heart and of course a spot in this FST.

* * *

15. Poe - Terrible Thought

I must stay calm you know and I must be clear
It's gonna take a hundred thoughts to make this one disappear
A train like that can travel a soul for years
A terrible thought can have a terribly long career

What minds have you shredded
I bet they regretted
Having ever thought you up
Just look at you shine
Commiting your crimes
You know I don't want you in my mind

'Cause you're breaking my stride
You poisonous vine
You're strangling me inside...

... You know, I can see Richard resisting the idea of starting anything with the marquis. I mean, just sayin'. XD;

* * *

16. Suzanne Vega - Rosemary

My sister says she never dreams at night
there are days when I know why
those possibilities within her sight
with no way of coming true
Some things just don't get through
into this world, although they try

In the Carmen of the Martyrs
With the statues in the courtyard
Whose heads and hands were taken
In the burden of the sun
I had come to meet you
With a question in my footsteps
I was going up the hillside
And the journey just begun

Again, not entirely sure this fits. It is hard to find songs for the marquis de Carabas, and all of them seem to come more from the beginning of his career than any point in actual canon. This one comes closest, though... the lyrics mostly don't fit (though the bit about dreaming sort of makes me think of his fear of sleep after dying...), but the feel of it sort of... works for me.

17. Vienna Teng - Drought

Summer move forward and leave your heat anchored in dust
Forgotten him, cheated him, painted illusions of lust
Now language escape, fugitive of forgiveness
Leaving as trace only circles of rust

And the taste of dried-up hopes in my mouth
And the landscape of merry and desperate drought
How much longer dear angels
Come break me with ice
Let the water of calm trickle over my doubts

Another one of those general story, encompassing-the-whole-thing songs. Vienna Teng's good for those, really. And just for the record, that verse up there... the first two lines make me think of Lamia, the second two of Hunter's betrayal. The rest of the song, nothing really in particular... but it very much makes me think "Neverwhere," so in it goes.

* * *

18. Vienna Teng - Hope On Fire

Gotta leave gotta bleed
You've gotta stop lying still
'cause this is no kind of life
You don't need guarantees
You just want something to build
Before you turn to the knife

When the streets are aflood like a fever
It's a holiday of the new
We're coming closer now to the truth

General! Told you she was good for this. :D This is such an energetic song, which is funny, because the book doesn't read as a lot of action scenes... but a LOT happens in such a short amount of time, some of it incredibly important and some of it violent, and all of it dangerous. It's easy to almost forget that.

* * *

19. Vienna Teng - Mission Street

Mission Street calls out to me by name
Then hurries on before I've hardly turned my head
Promises of answers muttered underneath her breath
Like an offering of contraband misread...

Well my hands are cold tonight
But the sky is bright with stars
And I'm tearing through the veil that keeps me blind
And it seems the more I'm wrong
The more that I am right
The more that I am right

The general story once again. This is another of those I need to make a video to, because it's just so... sweeping. Richard meets strange, strange people, and is called upon to question his life, realizing that in this new place, he knows nothing and is helplessly out of his depth, but in the end it's the world he's going to choose.

* * *

20. Vienna Teng - Recessional

and I never thought I would find her here:
flannel and satin, my four walls transformed.

she's looking at me, straight to center,
no room at all for any other thought.
and I know I don't want this. oh I swear I don't want this.
there's a reason I don't want this but I forgot.

in the terminal she sleeps on my shoulder,
hair falling forward, mouth all askew.
fluorescent announcements beat their wings overhead:
passengers missing, we're looking for you.

and she dreams through the noise, her weight against me,
face pressed into the corduroy grooves.
maybe it means nothing. maybe it means nothing.
maybe it means nothing, but I'm afraid to move.

And Vienna Teng gives us a song that isn't general! ... This is Richard/de Carabas. (Sometimes I really wonder if I should be less of a fangirl... then I think, "Nahh.") It's this... moment that shouldn't mean much of anything, but Richard's realizing despite himself that it does mean something, because the marquis means something. This especially fits a certain roleplay myself and alys_wonder are doing, that is amazing and loads of fun. 8D (And you all wondered why she was so helpful with this! Well, it's also because she loves me. XD; *snuzzles*)

* * *

21. The Who - Behind Blue Eyes

No one knows what it's like
To be the bad man
To be the sad man
Behind blue eyes

No one knows what it's like
To be hated
To be fated
To telling only lies

But my dreams
They aren't as empty
As my conscience seems to be

I don't know how well this fits, really, and it's probably overused to death on FSTs. But hey! I choose this as a marquis song. Even if it doesn't fit... it's a really, really great song, and worth picking up, especially if you only know the Limp Bizkit version. (Though don't get me wrong, I like that one a lot too, just... The Who♥)

No further explanation here. XD; Sorry.

~BONUS TRACK~

22. Suzanne Vega - Stockings

The fiction in her family
Was that she was never nice
I'd say she was very
I just did not see the price

Do you know where friendship ends
And passion does begin?
When the gin and tonic
Makes the room begin to spin
(oh yeah)

OKAY this one's just pure crack. It's for a genderswitch event in that RP I mentioned, where de Carabas and Richard are going to be women for a while. And this is New because Richard's thinking that the marquis (marquise?) makes an attractive woman, so things are getting a little. Awkward. As in de Carabas is taunting Richard for not being able to look straight at him/her. XD;;

But in light of that, it really fits! This is very much a girl!Richard POV song, on girl!marquise. Er. So there?

All Files (.zip): MegaUpload (too big for YouSendIt--SendSpace will come later, when it stops being a dick! :D)

**********

I don't have much else to say this FST around, either. XD; I need to be writing more fiction, especially for the challenges at the kuroxfai community, but... any ideas I have right now, all the things I'm inspired to write, are Neverwhere. How did I get back on this kick again...? Who knows? More importantly, who cares? XD; I just need to get something written, I'm atrophying here.

lamia, neverhwahr, neverwhere, door, the marquis de carabas is very very gay, lots of unecessary tags, fst, richard, hunter, the marquis de canon gay, general music sharing, islington
