11 You could feel the tension in the household, everyone could. But only Devin and Viviann knew exactly why. Viviann's guilt of sleeping with her stepbrother was eating her alive, and Devin for the first time, felt something similar to remorse over taking advantage of a sweet, innocent and desperate girl.
But he was determined to do something about it.
"Viviann, can I talk to you for a second?"
"I rather you didn't, I'm quite busy..."
"No! You listen to me! Are you trying to deny it happened? Because it happened, twice!" said Devin.
"I'm not trying to deny it happened, Devin. It happened. I'm trying to forget about it. Please forget about it."
"But... how do you expect me to forget that?"
"I don't know. Just do it, please." And she left him there, a wreck in his head.
"Are you sure you wanna do this now, Gaby? We could wait another week..."
"I'm not getting any smaller, Pete. Let's just do it now."
"Well, alright..."
"KIDS! We have an important announcement! Please come down, NOW!"
"Selina, Viviann, Devin, come on down!"
"What's the problem, old man?" said Devin.
"This better be important, I was on the phone with Matt." said Selina.
"You bet your butt it is!" said Pete.
"What's up, dad?" said Viviann.
"Great, we're all here now! Please take a seat, we have important news." said Peter.
"Well, as you know, Gaby's been feeling sick ever since we got back from our honey moon..."
"So, yesterday we went to the Doctor, and it's official..."
"You are all gonna have a new baby sister or brother!"
"What the fuck?"
"What?!" said the twins in unison.
"That's right, kids! Isn't it amazing?"
"But you're too old! How is it even possible?"
"We're not too old, Devin!" said Gaby.
"Congrats, Gaby! And dad!" said Viviann.
"Ah, well, congratulations! Can I go now? Matt's waiting for me..." said Selina.
"Yeah, yeah, run, I don't want you all pestering over my baby when they're born!" said Peter.
"Actually, dad, I wanted to talk to you..." said Viviann.
"What's up, baby?" said Peter.
"Dad, first of all congratulations. Now, I've been doing some thinking, and I think it's best for me to move with mum."
"What?! Is this for the pregnancy? Baby, we can always work things out..."
"No, no, dad! Not at all!" said Viviann.
"It's just that... the house is already crowded enough as it is, and my grades have been slipping a bit. I think mum's apartment is perfect for me to get back on track, it's so quiet, and there's already a room set up, I talked to her about it yesterday."
"Well, honey, you know I will always support your decisions, since you're so mature and responsible and know what you're doing..." said Peter.
"Of course, I rather you didn't walk out on me so blatantly!" said Peter.
"Dad!" said Viviann.
"I'm just kidding." said Peter between a laugh.
"Well, for whatever's worth, I am gonna miss you all so much. You, and Gaby, and Selina, and Hillary, and even this baby I don't even know yet!" said Viviann, conviniently leaving Devin out. Peter didn't seem to notice, though.
"Ah, don't worry about that at all! I'm sure you'll visit quite often, won't ya? And you have to be here to meet the baby!" said Peter.
"I'm just glad you're doing this for the right reasons, Viv, instead of for triggering a war between me and your mum." said Peter.
"Yeah," said Viviann, a knot on her throat. "Right reasons."
"Oh, Viviann! I'm so glad you're here now!"
"Me too, mum." said Viviann.
"We're gonna have so much fun together, you'll see. You all done unpacking?"
"Yeah, mum. I'm sure we'll do." said Viviann, a certain sadness to her voice. Sandra, however, did not notice.
"I'm happy you're here now, Viviann. I'm sure at your dad's place it was crowded."
"Sure. And it was about to get crowdier, Gaby's pregnant."
"Oh, is she? Well, your dad must be happy!" said Sandra.
"He really is. I haven't seen him so happy in his whole life." said Viviann.
"Yeah," said Sandra, a whole burning through her gut. "Good."
